Ring! Ring! Ring!
The bell finally rings ending another torturous day in high school. The sounds of chatter and scraping of desks instantly filled my ears. It was the sound of relief and joy that today was finally over. I climbed out of the desk myself grabbing my bag and books along the way before heading straight for the door exiting and inhaling the fresh fruitful air of a Spring day.
Leaving school had to be the best part of school, because it was the time you didn't have to worry about the next test you were taking or if you finished your homework on time. The only classes in school that mattered was lunch and free period. I mean lunch could have been better but I pretty much sat with myself unless one of my good friend Randy had my lunch, but that was it.
Girls didn't want to sit with me because I wasn't pretty enough for them. I talked about weird things like sports and video games and they hated that. At my school the only sport that was available to the girls was cheer leading. That's why I was on the boys team, I had to earn my way in there and into the starting line-up.
Passing through the basketball court, since it was the easiest way to my house, I could hear the faint sound of basketball's pounding the floor and for some reason that always gave me a rush of confidence. That's why I played basketball. I was good at it and it made me feel important.
Just as I was heading for the gate, I heard someone call out my name."Aye yo Tess! Come shoot some hoops with us!!" I recognized the voice all too soon.
Rondall St.Peter.
I turned and smiled before I calmly made my way to the court they were playing on. They meaning Ron and my basketball teammates.
Luis, Cory, Fez, and Mason. They all smiled when I approached them Ron's smile being the brightest of them all, when he smiled his deep dimples flashing as he did. I know the girls went crazy whenever that happened, they would either show up to the games to see him or Chase. Chase, on the other hand wasn't here which was always a good thing.
Ron bounce passed the ball to me and I caught it with ease. I dropped my bag to the floor, kicking it to the side without another glance. My eyes glanced up to the basketball hoop looking tall and mighty. Whenever I wanted to make a shot, I just imagined all my goals and dreams being at that hoop, the ball would be myself shooting for it. I knew it was sort of kooky and whack whenever I thought about something like that but it made me feel better when I made that shot.
"Show us what you got, Cookie." Mason called out to me.
Cookie. That was their nickname for me whenever I was on the court. They said I was sweet like one. It wasn't met to be a pet name or anything to put me any less down and for once I felt...pretty on this team. That maybe I was actually being looked at by guys.
I licked my lips lightly my hands gripping the ball tightly and with a bit of light work, the ball left my hands and went flying into the hoop with a quiet swish. The boys hollered and patted each other clearly impressed by my easy 3-pointer.
"And...thats why she's on the team, Cory." Ron nudged him.
Cory made a face, and rubbed the back of his head. "I never said anything about you Tess, I already know you're the best player." He said sweetly.
I smiled. "I know Cory, Ron is a fool." I said, Louis passed me the ball again and I made another clean shot with little to no effort.
"I am not a fool!" Ron argued.
