Chapter Two: Perry the platypus
"Pay up, suckers!"
I blinked as Thomas stood up on his chair and Lee played money by Cardi B. I glanced at Andrew beside me to see him taking out a ten dollar bill and handing it to the ginger that was announcing to the canteen that he 'didn't need the D.'
"Thomas, get down," I heard Freddie say, before he slapped the back of Lee's head, "and you turn that shit off. Did you two forget it's a Monday?"
"It's payday, Fred," Thomas exclaimed, as other members of the soccer team handed him dollar bills.
I looked at Andrew as we all took our usual chairs around the table. Freddie Williams, captain of the soccer team, sat at the end of the table. Andrew Baker, the schools golden boy, sat to his left and Lee Park, anime and manga fan, to his left. Thomas, everyone's favourite ginger, sat beside Lee and across from me. They were all on the soccer team and everyone knew them.
"You made a bet?" I asked, looking at the three boys I saw handling the money. It was obvious that Freddie wasn't in on it, he was the sensible one of my friends.
Lee nodded, "Thomas bet the team that there would be a fight today."
"More exactly, I bet that there would be a fight in Cole's arrival," Thomas corrected, before smiling softly at me and holding out a ten dollar note to me. "Take it, then I'll have good karma."
"You should've gotten Jess involved in the bet," Andrew said with a mouthful of rice, "She knows Cole."
"What?" I exclaimed, not liking that all the guys were now staring at me, "No, I don't and I thought his name was Austin, not Cole."
"His last name is Cole," Lee said, "and I did overhear some chicks from the basketball team saying that Cole called some chick Mellow."
"I heard it was Lottie," Thomas chimed in.
"It was Melody," Andrew told them, a grin on his face. He thought this whole thing was amusing. "And he gave her back her little notebook that she never lets us look at."
"Because it's private," I said, before looking at the end of the table at Freddie, "You're friends with him, right?"
"Yeah," Freddie said, his eyebrows furrowed as he stared at me. It was like he was in deep confusion about something. "He's a family friend."
"I always forget you have a secret life without us," Lee muttered, "that's some Hannah Montana shit, Fred."
"More like Perry the platypus," Thomas said, only to earn a fist bump from Lee.
Freddie raised an eyebrow at me, "Austin talked to you?"
"More like warned me," I tried to explain, "he stole one of the pages of my notebook. Could you try get it back for me?"
Freddie nodded, "Yeah, sure, but you're sure it was Austin?"
"It was definitely Cole," Andrew said, "he was all busted from the fight."
"Not as bad as Peter was," Thomas chimed it, "I saw him carried out by the paramedics. He was is such bad shape. I'll be surprised if Cole isn't expelled."
"Do you know what the fight was about, Fred?" Lee asked, picking up his lunch.
Freddie shook his head, "No."
"Cole didn't tell you?" Andrew asked, his eyebrows furrowed together.
"The Cole's keep to themselves," Freddie shrugged, "especially Austin."
