Chapter thirty-five: The closest was glass.

We were all covered in green paint as we walked into the canteen. I felt a tug on my arm and I turned around to see Andrew smiling sheepishly at him.

I glanced at the guys as they headed into the canteen knowing that they all probably knew that Andrew and I needed to talk.

"Jess, I wanted to say I'm sorry. I know she's your best friend and I shouldn't have kissed her," Andrew said softly, "trust me, Cole's been giving me us hell over not telling you. Why do you think Madison backed off him?"

I shook my head, "it's okay."

"No, it's not," Andrew said sharply, more angry at himself than me. "I screwed up. I made you upset and that's the last thing you need on your plate. I like her, Jess, but she's not worth our friendship."

I wrapped my arm around his waist and sighed softly, resting my chin on his shoulder. "If you like her you should fight for her, Drew and if it's any consolation I think she likes you to."

"You're not mad?"

I shook my head, "I was more upset at what Madison said and the fact she wanted to keep it a secret from me. I'll talk to her later when you guys have practice."

We pulled away from each other and he smiled at me, "and uh, are you and Cole?"

"Are me and Austin?" I repeated with an eyebrow raised. What was he about to say?

Andrew wiggled his eyebrows at me and I laughed, shoving his chest. "No, why the hell would you think that?"

"Because you were basically on top of him when we found you."

I shook my head, "I fell."

"Sure," Andrew hummed, "just make me godfather and not the others, all right?"

"We're not doing anything!"

Andrew smirked at me before he ran into the canteen. I laughed running behind him not wanting him to say anything about the position Austin and I were found in. The last thing I needed was another lunch full of teasing.

I wasn't going to kiss Austin Cole. He wasn't going to kiss me. We just happened to be very close. For the second time in two days.

"I will make you green," I heard Lee threaten.

I looked towards the lunch table and I saw Nicole and her cronies sitting at our table. I walked over to where I usually sat and stood beside Austin. He glanced down at me, a smile playing on his lips, "all good?"

I nodded before glancing at Nicole and her friends that were pretending not to hear Lee. "What's going on?"

"No idea," Austin shrugged, "they won't get up."

"Nicole, come on, this is childish even for you," Andrew said which made Nicole snap her head towards him before she finally acknowledged us all.

Her eyes met mine and a wicked smile broke out on her face. "Hi Jess, did you get the post-it left on your locker this morning?"

I narrowed my eyes at her. I should've known that she was involved. I should've–

"You know, you were the last one to figure it out. You're terribly oblivious to everything. I bet you get that from your mom, after all, the two of you didn't know your dad was playing house with my mom and I for months."

"Jesus," I heard Thomas exclaim, "am I the only one that feels terribly sorry for this girl? She wants to be Jess so bad that she stole her dad and now her lunch seat."
