Chapter LI

I wake up to the sound of a voice flowing out through speakers.

"This is your Captain speaking. Please return to your seats and fasten your seatbelts. We will arrive shortly." I keep lying down, not wanting to wake up just yet. I wipe my mouth as I feel a small pool under my cheek, and then quickly take my hands up to cover my eyes, as the lights are turned on. I moan in frustration and rub my eyes while turning onto my back.

"Come on sleepy head," I hear Dom almost sing-sang to me as he nudges me on my shoulder.

"Noo," I moan and pull the blanket up over my head. I hear Dom chuckle on the other side, and then my bed starts to convert back into a seat. I pull the blanket down slightly and give him the meanest side-eye I can muster while still squinting against the light.

"Captain's orders," he states and shrugs. His seat is already up and he has his blanket and pillow bundled in his lap. I buckle in now that my seat is all the way up as well, and then I throw my blanket and pillow over to Dom.

"You fix that," I say grumpily and lean up against the window, and that's when I notice the land we are flying over. It's so green! We are getting closer to the ground and all I see for miles and miles are big green squares of varying size, shape, and shade of green. There are also a lot of hills and forests everywhere. This is not at all how it looked when we took off - then there had just been a lot of cities and gray.

"It's breathtaking, right?" Dom asks softly behind me, bringing me out of my stupor. I turn around and nod eagerly.

"You lived here?" I ask him incredulously. He nods with a hint of proudness.

"Why would you ever leave?" I then ask, not understanding why someone would ever leave this wonderland of green and peace. His face falls a bit at that, and I regret asking.

"It's a long story. I'll tell it to you sometime, but for now, I'm just happy to be back." He gives me a bit of a strained smile, and then his eyes shift over to look out the window just next to me. I can't help but get the feeling, that whatever he is thinking about is something sad. I look away, just as the plane bumps down on the tarmac, giving me a bit of a surprise.

We roll on for a time before the plane comes to a halt, and all the stewardesses begin to file down the walkway, helping people get their baggage down from the compartments. Dom gets up and takes my hand, helping me out on the walkway with him, and then we leave the plane arm-in-arm.

We are quick to exit the airport since we didn't have any baggage at all, and as soon as the fresh air hits my face, I breathe in deeply. It's so light and brisk, reminding me of the feeling when you get a nice cold drink of water in the middle of the night. I smile and just stand still for a time with my face turned skyward and with closed eyes. I let myself relax, knowing that we are now away from all of the dangers and that I have nothing to worry about. It makes my smile even wider, and I completely empty my lungs in an exhale.

I look up at Dom next to me, and I notice that he too seems to be enjoying the moment just as I had. I wonder what he is thinking. He then looks down at me and gives me a sincere smile.

"Shall we?" he asks holding out his hand for me to take. I smile and clap my hand down on top of his before he then squeezes it and we begin to walk.

Dom seems to be guiding us over to a big parking lot connected to the airport. We walk along the rows of cars, checking out all of them as we go. Then Dom suddenly stops and points down towards a car parked a couple of meters away.

"That one," he says and walks with hasty steps, dragging me behind him. It's another vintage car - must be Dom's soft spot - and Dom makes quick work of getting it open. I have no idea how he does it since I doubt he has a lockpick on him, but I digress.

He gets into the driver's side, but then quickly steps out again, pauses, then looks at me.

"Do you want to drive?" he asks, looking rather amused at the thought. I let out a surprised laugh, then shrug.

"Well, yeah! But I don't know. Is it a good idea?" I then ask back. He shakes his head and puts up a hand to stop me.

"I asked; do you want to?" he repeats, now with a devilish look on his face. I gape at him for a second, then chuckle before walking over to the driver's side. I push him to the side and plop down into the seat as he closes the door for me, just before he plops down on the seat beside me. I look at him excited, not sure what to do now. He nods his head up towards the sun visor, so I reach up, and then a key falls down in my lap. I look at him puzzled how he would know that.

"Scottish people have always been a rather trusting people. And we definitely shouldn't take advantage of that more than absolutely necessary," he explains, which makes me feel a bit bad, thinking about the people who are going to return to their car stolen. Dom must see my guilt, as he reaches over and endearingly claps my thigh.

"Don't worry about it, they'll survive," he says in a cheery tone, and I decide that that is good enough for me. I put the keys in the ignition and turn. The car starts with a purr and a nice vibration throughout.

"Do you know how to drive?" Dom asks me, and I shrug in response.

"I think so - I have tried a few times, but never on a public road, so you are going to have to guide me a bit," I then add and throw him a glance. He nods.

"Not a problem," he responds and smiles.

"Onward!" he then exclaims and points forward, and I set the car in motion.
