POV Katsuki
Katsuki was about to explode. If he couldn't blow something up, he would go crazy! He needed to calm down - and urgently. He knew that his anger was getting to Izuku. At least since he sensed his omega's increasing nervousness.
A hand was placed on his shoulder and Katsuki flinched. Dr. Yaguchi stood next to him in the cramped room, where the neurologists and orthopaedists were also waiting for the examination results, and looked at him sympathetically. "I understand that it's difficult for you, Bakugou-san. You're holding up bravely - both of you."
The alpha grumbled discontentedly. There was a hint of his pissed-off pheromones in the air and he found it hard to hold them back. The sight of the x-rays had done him in. "I'm about to jump down someone's throat. And instead of calming down, I'm making it worse and unsettling my mate."
"But you're not doing it," Dr. Yaguchi countered. "You're controlling yourself."
At the moment, Izuku was undergoing a CT scan to examine the surrounding tissue and the nerves around the fractures in his bones more closely. He was wearing a thin hospital gown for the examination. So his courting bite and some of his scars were visible to everyone involved. For the past fifteen minutes, the alpha had been squeezed into the room with the five doctors, which was actually only designed for two people.
Katsuki snorted. "Only on the outside, and that's the problem." It was easy for the alpha to talk to the doctor. He had already liked her after Izu's rescue. Ever since she had sent the cocky student packing, her popularity had risen a few points.
"What do you mean?" the doctor asked.
Katsuki pushed up his sleeve and showed her Izuku's bite. Before she could say anything, Dr. Watanabe's voice rang out. "His pulse is elevated and he's moving too much. We can't get a clear picture."
Frantic breathing sounded through the loudspeaker that was transmitting the sounds from the CT scanner to the observation room. The alpha jerked his head around and watched the two orthopaedic surgeons in front of the screens. Fuck! This was his fault ...
Dr. Itou pressed the button for the microphone. "Midoriya-san, please try to calm down. You've almost made it."
"K-Kacchan?" Izuku's voice rang out through the speaker. "Are you s-still there? What's w-wrong?"
Without waiting for permission, he pushed his way forward to the control panel. He raised an eyebrow challengingly and the older doctor hurried to press the button for the microphone. "I'm here, babe. Everything's okay. You're doing great," he said gently.
"Then why are y-you so angry?"
Of course his partner had felt it through their connection. They were very close and the feeling was too strong. "I'm sorry - headcanon. It's all good. I promise. I'm trying to think of something else, okay? I didn't mean to upset you. Just hang in there for a few more minutes, okay?"
Izuku's breathing calmed down a little. A glance at the screen showed that his pulse had also lowered. "O-Okay."
Katsuki took a step back and Dr. Itou took his finger off the button. "How did he know you were...?" The doctor swallowed and stopped speaking as soon as he noticed the alpha's scowl.
"Why do you think?"
Dr. Kobayashi, the only other alpha in the room, took the floor. "Neither of you wear a mark on your neck, and even then it's extremely rare to have such a connection. So how can it be?" There was a curious glint in his eyes. It seemed to Katsuki as if the doctor was pleased to have discovered a particularly interesting lab rat.
"We both have each other's mark, just not on our necks - not yet." The blond couldn't help but feel pride for their intimate connection.
Dr. Takahashi, the second neurologist, leaned over to his colleague and whispered something in his ear while pointing to Katsuki's exposed wrist.
"You're also wearing a courting bite? How unusual! And you can really sense each other's emotions? Already? May I perhaps-?"
The hero interrupted him. "Yes, we can, and no, we're not volunteering to be lab rats. Don't one of you get the idea to harass my mate in this regard. As we can all see, he's got more than enough shit done to him."
A beeping sounded from the surveillance monitor. Izuku's heart rate was up again.
"Fuck!" Katsuki closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose. He finally had to come down. He wasn't helping his omega like this, he was only making things worse.
Dr. Yaguchi's voice sounded next to him. "Perhaps you could go into the corridor for a moment, Bakugou-san? Dr. Nakamura and Recovery Girl are also waiting there. We have almost everything now. As soon as we're done, I'll tell you and you can go straight next door to your mate. How does that sound?"
"And what if Izu asks for me again?"
"Then I'll bring you straight back in and you can talk to him. It's okay to go outside the door for a moment. It won't make you leave him. You're still here by his side. But this whole situation is understandably not easy for you either."
Katsuki opened his eyes and met the doctor's encouraging smile. The woman really had a talent for putting him at ease. "All right, but just because I trust that you only want the best for him, too."
"Of course, Bakugou-san."
Katsuki pushed past the other doctors and made his way to the door. As soon as he stepped into the hallway, he took a deep breath, dropped into a chair next to Recovery Girl and tried to compose himself.
"Is something wrong, my boy?"
It was strange of the old heroine to be called a boy when the alpha was almost twice as tall as Grandma. Still, he didn't take offense. It brought back memories of a simpler time and Katsuki felt nostalgic.
"It's okay," he pressed out. "I just had to get out of there for a bit. It's worse than I imagined. His bones ... those bastards hurt him so much."
The old woman patted his shoulder. "That's tough. I'm glad he's got you by his side - after all, it took you long enough."
"How am I supposed to understand that?"
Dr. Nakamura, who had kept to the background until now, took a curious step forward. Katsuki was grateful that the therapist was also present today to provide moral support for his mate.
The heroine smiled mischievously. "I realized back then how you two were meant for each other. Only you blockhead didn't want to see that." She slapped him lightly on the back of the head and the alpha winced.
Katsuki grumbled discontentedly. "I didn't know the truth about his secondary gender back then. Besides, I was a stupid teenager with a god complex."
The old woman's laughter sounded tinny, but it helped him to relax. Hopefully Izuku would notice it at his end of their connection. As soon as the laughter had faded, a comfortable silence spread between them. For the moment, everything had been said and all they could do was wait.
It wasn't long before the door to the observation room opened and Dr. Yaguchi stepped out. Katsuki looked at her expectantly. "We have everything we need. You can go in and see him. Midoriya-san can get dressed again and then we'll meet in my office once my colleagues have made an assessment and worked out a treatment plan."
The alpha was relieved. "How long will that take, roughly?"
The doctor grimaced. "I'll be honest with you. The damage is more massive than we thought, so the decision on which approach is the right one can't be made so easily."
Katsuki grumbled discontentedly, even though he knew it wasn't doing him any good. It was not for nothing that he and the surgeon had requested specialists from this hospital as well as others from a clinic on the other side of the country. "So, how long?"
"Why don't you two go to the cafeteria for a while or, if you prefer, to the garden and I'll meet you back in my office in an hour."
With a sigh on his lips, the blonde stood up and headed for the door to the CT. "See you in an hour then."
