Tears stained Charlotte's cheeks as she sat alone in her room, the weight of her father's disappointment heavy upon her shoulders. With a heavy sigh, she resolved to go downstairs and apologise once more, hoping to mend the fractured bond between them.
But when she reached the bottom of the stairs, her father was nowhere to be found. Panic gnawed at her insides as she frantically searched the house, but there was no sign of him. No note left behind, no explanation for his sudden disappearance.
Desperate for answers, Charlotte turned to her mother, her fingers trembling as she typed out a message on her phone. Her mother's reply came quickly, but it offered no solace—her father had returned to the family house in Oxfordshire, leaving Charlotte to grapple with her confusion and uncertainty.
With a sinking feeling in her chest, Charlotte tried to call her father, but he didn't answer. Frustration bubbled within her as she realized she was once again left in the dark, her heart heavy with worry and regret.
Feeling utterly alone, Charlotte turned to the one person she knew she could rely on—Max. With a shaky breath, she sent him a message, inviting him over to her house in the hopes of finding some comfort and understanding.
When Max arrived, he brought with him a box of chocolates, a small gesture of kindness that touched Charlotte's heart. As they sat together in her living room, Charlotte poured out the details of her fight with her father, her voice trembling with emotion.
"I just don't understand why he's so upset," she confessed, her words choked with tears. "I thought we had moved past all of this."
Max reached out to gently take her hand, his touch a soothing balm to her troubled soul. "I'm sorry you're going through this, Lottie," he said softly, his eyes filled with empathy. "But maybe this is an opportunity for you and your father to work through your differences together."
Charlotte nodded, her heart heavy with the weight of his words. "I just wish I knew what to do," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper.
Max squeezed her hand reassuringly. "You don't have to figure it out alone, Lottie," he said, his voice filled with conviction. "I'm here for you, no matter what."
A sense of gratitude washed over Charlotte as she looked into Max's eyes, feeling a glimmer of hope amidst the darkness that had enveloped her.
