Jason turned the corner of the hallway, almost running into the blue-haired girl again.

"Sorry," Jason began, however by the time he could get any more words out she walked right past him.

"Or not," muttered Jason.

"Jason!" called Allegra. "I found this super cute café near the dorms, but I don't wanna go alone! Can you-"

"Absolutely not," said Jason, slightly petrified by the thought of coffee.

"Why not?!" asked Allegra. "I hear they have mugs for sale!"

"Why would that be an incentive?"

"You seemed like a mug guy," Allegra shrugged. "I'm desperate, okay?!" She gave Jason a look that managed to persuade him.

"Fine," Jason rolled his eyes. "Let's go."

"Yay!" Allegra clapped her hands.

The café was a small, cozy area with potted plants lined across the walls. The sun shone through a window on the rooftop, and a bookshelf sat in the corner near the cashier.

"Welcome to Asfalís Café," said the register with an all-too fake smile, "What can I get started for you?"

As Allegra ordered her coffee, Jason remembered his mother's coffee...

(Eight Years Ago)

Jason peered across the living room. It was ten o'clock, an hour past his bedtime. He was hungry and wanted to get a late night snack.

His mom sat in the kitchen, sipping her coffee.

Jason "sneakily" rolled across the floor into a crawl, attempting to reach the pantry.

"I can hear you, you know," said his mom. "Jason, if you're hungry, you could've told me."

She got up and made pancakes for him. Jason's mom made him pancakes whenever he was hungry, no matter the time of day. Jason didn't complain, though.

"Jason," said his mother with a warming smile. "What would you like?"

"Pancakes," said Jason.

"Um, we don't serve pancakes here, sir."

Jason realized he was dreaming out loud.

"Oh, sorry. A water will do," said Jason.

The cashier tapped on her electronic register.

"8.95," said the cashier.

Allegra fished through her purse. Jason noticed this, and pulled a ten from his pocket and handed it to the cashier.

"You don't have to pay!" Allegra tried to stop Jason (unsuccessfully). "I dragged you out here, anyway..."

"It's fine," said Jason. "It's not a problem, really."

"If you insist," said Allegra.

With that, they sat down and waited for their name to be called.

"So Jason," said Allegra, "why are you here?"

"Uh, you wanted me to come here?" Jason was a little confused.

"No," she said,

"Why are you at Asfalís Academy?"
