JourneeNever did I think I'd be here this way. But I couldn't do anything but thank God that I am.
I'm not exactly sure what the future holds for me, or for Tiana and I, but I'm not afraid either. Well at least I try hard not to be, most days. Whereas other days I wonder, and I worry. But who doesn't? It's human.
Behind me was the bed's headboard as a soft blanket draped across my bare shoulders. The night sky was seamless, vast, and full of stars as the moon in its last stage provided a soft light, peaking through the sheer curtains that hung high above the bedroom window.
Underneath my crossed ankles was Tiana's lower waist, for she laid on her belly, nose deep into a book.
Sunday evenings for us were often spent this way. Just enjoying each other's company in peaceful silence, or with a record playing in the distance usually. And I loved it to no end, for it was simple, yet an utterly special aspect of our relationship. She reads, while I write. Then she'll occasionally call out in frustration or excitement from whatever was going on in those books of hers. And I'd hold back a smile as she'd rant to me about what happened and why she either loved or hated it.
On the other hand, I'd do the same. Rambling to her about a certain song idea in my head, which then led to me singing it to her, or asking for her opinions on certain parts.
And it'd continue until either of us fell asleep, which was usually Tiana. Or we'd fall into a little something other than sleep.
"Hey," she spoke, her attention on her book still. Continuing to write, I glanced at her.
"Hm?"
"What you want for your birthday miss thing?"
"Absolutely nothin," I chuckled. "I told you, it's not important to me."
"But what if it's important to me?"
"Tee..." Sighing, I glimpsed up from my notebook to find her eyes already glued to me, little humor within them. "Baby it's two months away, can we do this later?"
Shuffling to sit with her legs crossed as she spread mine and draped them over her lap, her eyes peered into mine. "Only if you tell me what you want."
"Tiana, I don't-"
"Just one little thing, Rose-" Her arms reached for my waist to pull me into her lap in one swift motion, reminding me of her strength despite her size. And I gazed down at pouting lips and pleading eyes as she held me close. "It can be as small as a flower or breakfast in bed. Just give me somethin,' anything- then I'll leave you alone..."
Her words and the adorable expression on her face gained a slowly spreading smile from me. Feeling playful, my arms wrapped around her neck as I pressed my forehead to hers.
"Just one thing huh?"
"Mhm, at the least- but if you got more than that I'd love to hear it."
"You don't say," I trailed, smiling as she laughed softly. "Fine then. I waaanttt.....a cake."
Drawing back, humor filled her gaze as she met mine with a giggle. "Seriously Journee? A cake?? You bake them all the time honey."
"Yeah but you don't," I smirked, pecking her lips. "Plus it's not just any cake.... I never had a birthday cake before," I spoke a bit softer, and her smile fell as she realized. "You manage to get that for me and I'll love you forever my dear," I grinned before retreating back to my spot against the headboard.
