april 1791

in the depths of the palace's dungeons, your father is bound to the cold, hard walls.

the king, adorned in black and gold outfit, walks into the dark damp room, his executioner following suit.

"tell me, old man. where is your daughter hiding?"

he knows why suga wants you. not because he loves you, but because he always needs to win. he always has to have his way. he can't let a man like him come close to his daughter.

so your father says nothing, his silence resolute and the king clicks his tongue, clearly annoyed by your father's spirit.

"i won't keep asking nicely."

hours turns into days, and days into weeks as the torture continues relentlessly. yet, your father remains silent, though his body grows weaker and weaker every day.

as the weeks turn into months, the king's patience dwindles, and frustration gives way to rage.

he summons him one final time in his throne hall.

"tell me where she is."

"no."

the king inhales a sharp breath, a muscle in his jaw twitching in anger as his grip tightens on the arm rests of his throne.

you run through halls laden with memories of your childhood—memories of laughter, friendships, and innocent play. with trembling hands, you step into the king's court, accompanied by your father's most trusted friend, myeongnim sanggye. he adjusts the hood of your cloak, making sure your face stays hidden from the public, and especially from the king. he knows it's a risk to bring you here. your father always wanted you to never step foot into the castle again, but sanggye thinks you deserve to know what's really going on, and he wants his good friend to die surrounded by at least 2 people who love him.

your gaze locks onto your father, shackled and forced to kneel before the executioner. you barely can tell that it's him, his face and body beaten beyond recognition.

and then you see him - the king, your childhood friend, standing by the executioner's side. how has he become so cold and ruthless? he was your friend. even more, your father gave his all for this kingdom. he fought countless battles, defended both suga and his father.

you want to scream, to plead for your father's life, but you're frozen in shock.

the king's voice talks about how your father stole food from the army and commands the executioner to carry out the sentence.

as the executioner raises his sword, the metallic glimmer reflecting in the sunlight, your father turns his gaze towards yours.

your eyes lock, and you see a flicker of recognition, a plea for you to understand why he did what he did– why he made you move when you turned 12, why he hastily engaged you to someone when suga turned king, and why he said he had to leave for work when in reality he knew suga was looking for him.

with a final swing, the blade descends, and your father's head falls to the ground as you watch, your eyes unblinking, your soul shatters into a million pieces. your father is gone, stolen from you by the very person you had once called a friend.

"you look nervous," the king remarks casually, looking over the balcony as he watches yet another traitor get beheaded.
