Third person pov:)
she approached Dev, hoping for answers. "Dev, about earlier in court," she began, her tone casual yet probing. "Why involve the soldiers' wives? You and Trupti could have spoken to me directly. What's really going on?"
Dev, lounging in the courtyard with Chavi on his lap, smiled but it didn't reach his eyes. "Ranisa," he said, his voice light, "You're overthinking it. We just want the soldiers to come home. The kingdom has been at peace for a while now; surely it's time they return to their families."
Vedanti narrowed her eyes. "Is that all? No other motive behind it?"
Trupti entered the scene, her laughter ringing out as she joined them. "Vedanti, you're always so suspicious," she teased, waving a hand. "Dev and I simply want to make life better for the people. There's no hidden agenda."
Vedanti wasn't convinced. But before she could press further, Dev quickly changed the subject. "Look at Chavi, she's growing up so fast!" he exclaimed, lifting the little girl into the air, making her giggle. "I think she's going to be a ruler one day—bossing everyone around already!"
Trupti laughed, and Vedanti couldn't help but smile at the sight of Chavi's innocent joy. But her smile faltered when she heard hurried footsteps behind her.
"Maasa!" Raj and Abhi came running towards her, panting, their faces glowing with excitement. "We want to play too!" Abhi shouted, already reaching out for Dev to pick him up.
Dev, still holding Chavi, glanced at the two boys and grinned mischievously. "Oh, look, Chavi! The little princes have arrived!" he teased. "But wait... where's their father?" His tone was light, but it cut deeper than any blade.
Vedanti's heart stopped for a moment, her gaze flickering to Dev. What was he doing?
Abhi and Raj looked at each other, confusion clouding their innocent faces. "Our baba is... far away," Raj said, his voice small but sure.
Abhi, never one to stay quiet, stomped his little foot. "Baba is at war! He will come back soon!" he declared, though even he sounded unsure.
But Dev wasn't done. "Chavi, do you know who your father is?" he asked, playing with her small hands as she babbled in response. "See? She knows I'm always here for her."
Raj's face scrunched up, and Abhi's lips quivered, sensing the unfairness in the moment. "Where's your baba, boys? Maybe you should ask your mother to call him back," Dev said with a smirk, ruffling Raj's hair.
Vedanti's blood boiled, watching her sons' reactions. How could Dev—their uncle—say such things? Raj and Abhi didn't deserve this kind of manipulation, especially not from someone they trusted.
Raj, ever the calm one, swallowed hard, his small fists clenched at his sides. "mamasa (uncle) Baba will come when he can..." he whispered, though there was doubt in his eyes now.
But Abhi, always full of fire, burst out, "No! I want Baba now! Why doesn't he come like Chavi's father? Why can't Baba be with us too?" His voice cracked, and he looked at Vedanti, tears welling up in his wide eyes.
The pain in Abhi's voice shattered something in Vedanti. She knelt down, her hands gently cupping her son's tear-streaked face. "Abhishek," she whispered, her heart aching for him. "Baba loves you more than anything. He's doing something important for the kingdom, but I promise you, he will come back."
Raj, silent and stoic, stood by, his tiny frame shaking. He didn't cry, but the hurt was evident in his eyes as he stared at the ground.
Vedanti couldn't take it anymore. She turned to Dev, fury simmering in her eyes. "How could you?" she hissed, her voice trembling with controlled rage. "How could you put those thoughts into their heads? They're just children, Dev! Abhirath may be far, but he's still their father. You don't have the right to make them feel like this."
