Four Witch Sisters in Training

Chapter 16

I remember only a few things from when I was a little girl, like going to the park, Halloween and Christmas, but there’s one day when I was six years old, I’m recalling it now, I had a vivid dream that may or may not have been real. It was a warm sunny day, but by the time night came, it was rainy, lightning, and thundering outside. Mom and dad just tucked me and my sisters in, and at the time Clover and Colleen were not troublemakers.

“Mom, is the boogey man going to get me tonight?” I remember asking my mom with a worried expression.

“Don’t fret, $tarr,” Mom replied back, smiling at me. “The boogey man doesn’t exist, and even if it did exist, the boogey man is afraid of light, and in my book, stars shine brightly.”

Yes that sounds cheesy, but at the time it made me feel safe. She turned off the lights in our room, and then I heard Colleen and Clover turning around in their beds, trying to get comfortable. Dream’s bed was right next to mine, and whenever either of us was scared, we’d face each other and talk.

I turned to look at Dream, but to my surprise, she wasn’t in bed. I wiggled out of my covers and walked over to Clovers bed. “Clover? Dream isn’t in her bed.”

“What do you mean?” Clover grumbled angrily. “She was in her bed when mom and dad said goodnight to us.”

By this time, Colleen sat up in her bed and stared at Clover and me, annoyed. “Will you two be quiet? Mom and dad are going to come back in here and yell at us.”

“But Dream’s gone!” I whispered. “There’s nowhere she could have gone!”

At that moment, Clover, Colleen, and I heard a creaking noise against the wall, then the sound of something moving. Clover and Colleen got out of bed as the wall in front of us started moving. Once the wall was fully turned, Dream was right there, wearing a petrified expression on her face.

“There’s something wrong in this house!” Dream wailed, running toward us, shaking violently. “There’s a bunch of books about witches and mythical creatures! Why do we have books about that?”

The door to our room opened, mom popped her head in, looking curiously at all of us. “What’re you all doing up, and why are you shaking Dream?”

Dream ran to her and started crying. The door shut behind her as mom closed it and ushered her to the living room. Colleen looked at me, her eyes wide with shock. Clover looked between me and Colleen and snorted loudly. “You two actually think Dream saw all of that?”

“Well, yeah,” I said hesitantly. “Don’t you believe her?”

“Puh-lease,” Clover said laughing out loud. “Dream is a dramatic seven year-old. I wouldn’t believe a thing she says, especially about books involving witches.”

“It is farfetched,” Colleen admitted. “I mean why would mom and dad have books about witches hidden in a secret passageway?”

“How could you not believe Dream?” I exclaimed. “She got stuck in a secret passageway! SECRET PASSAGEWAY! Also, we’ve seen mom and dad carry books about that, but they said it was something for a project for work! Maybe they were lying!”

“Calm down, $tarr!” Colleen said, trying to calm me down. “This house is probably really old, that’s why there are secret passageways in the house.”

After that, I walked angrily back into bed and lied back down even though I wasn’t tired. I listened to the sounds of mom and dad’s hushed voices. I wonder what they’ll say about Dreams discovery.
