Her words are repeated in my head. Constantly pushing past the barrier I created in my mind between her and me. "I've always been confined to one place."I can't shake off this feeling, Is it guilt? Pity? I don't know, but the change in her soft voice was so visibly upsetting to me in a way. I can't fucking stand it.
This is different.
This is dangerous.
This is ridiculous.
This is stupid."Absolutely not." Kimberly denies me sternly. "She has no control of her ability. What if something happens that triggers her powers to channel in public?" She folds her arms across her chest.
"Celina and I would be there to make sure that doesn't happen." I respond simply. "I strongly believe that her being—sheltered her entire life is the prime reason she isn't channeling her ability." I explain, careful with my choices of words in front of Kimberly.
Kimberly narrows her Heterochronic eyes on me, and me solely. A mixture of annoyance and anger radiates off her.
I look behind me towards Celina, Asking for back up with just a glance. Although she isn't too fond of the idea either; She does step up to back me up, but with a snotty expression on her face. "Kim, You told us in battle brief that you don't have an exact answer to when you think the protectors will attack us, but you feel it coming soon."
"And When the protectors do provoke a fight," She says. "We won't even match their lines of defense without Isadora and her ability." She reminds Kimberly, Her tone is stern and serious, the complete opposite of Celina when she's around me.
"I know you didn't intend on trailing the outskirts of this Sanctuary with water for nothing." I add in.
Kimberly's sharp gaze meets mine. I sharpen mine to match the intensity with hers; I don't blink, It's like two animals locking eyes, one prey and one predator. But we're fighting to determine which one is which.
Kimberly is like a parent-figure to me and Celina. I never challenge her on anything, because I value my relationship with her too much. And while we both have this mutual respect for one another, it's always been a boundary I've been hesitant to cross.
Challenging her could mess with that relationship—or even ruin it. And that's a a boundary of mine I've never bothered crossing Until today.
Kimberly's eyes narrowed for a split of a second, it was a look that didn't need words to express what she was asking; "Are you really challenging me?" I narrow my eyes further to tell my answer. "Yes."
"Fine." She growls, I can hear the annoyance in the tone of her voice. "But if anything, And I mean anything goes wrong," She points two fingers to me and Celina. "I'll be holding both of you accountable."
I nod in response. "Of course." Celina rolled her eyes. I bet she wished Kimberly had disapproved of the idea, She has such a disliking to Isadora.
One I can't understand, but the subject makes her tense, and that I do understand.
"We'll be careful." I promise, offering Her a smile—one she brushes off with a roll of her eyes. "I'll tell Nora about this once she gets back." She tells us.
I nod. Nora is currently at her shift at the hospital; Nora is our only source of income to fund this place, while being our only doctor at the same time. Nora comes from a wealthy blood-line of doctors. She provides the sanctuary with supplies, and like mentioned earlier—income.
And while she funds our sanctuary, she stays underground To keep us safe from the government that currently funds the Protectors. That only proves to me further of how corrupt our world is, and how unsafe it is for us.
