She puts on the outfit and leaves her room.
In the dining room, against the wall, was a mini buffet. Clove places a few different foods on her plate and takes a seat at the empty table. She eats in silence. After a couple minutes, Cato comes out of his bedroom, in a similar outfit to hers. He starts serving himself food and takes a seat next to Clove.
The elevator door behind them opens and Hibiscus walks out. "Good morning you two. Hurry and finish your food. Training starts soon." She says.
Clove finishes her food and goes to brush her teeth. When she gets back, Cato and Hibiscus are waiting for her. The three enter the elevator and go down a few floors. The doors open to reveal a huge gymnasium. There are weapon stations, survival spots, and parkour. Hibiscus pushes Cato and Clove forward and bids them good luck. They join the circle of Tributes in the middle of room and Atala begins to explain the rules.
Once they are dismissed, Clove heads straight to the throwing knives. She takes three and sends them flying at the moving targets, impressing weaker Tributes.
At lunch, District One joins them at their lunch table.
"Hi! I'm Glimmer!" A blonde girl says. "This is Marvel." She points to the boy next to her.
"I'm Cato." Cato says. "This is Clove."
Clove watches as Glimmer takes a seat next to Cato. She begins to talk to him, and showing clear signs of affection towards him. Marvel and Clove share a quick glace with eachother. "Is she always like this?" Clove asks him.
"Pretty much. We've been friends since forever, and I have noticed that she can't go a day without flirting." Marvel chuckles.
Clove laughs. "Cato's the same way. His first girlfriend was at the age of thirteen."
"Are you guys friends?" Marvel asks.
Clove stays quiet for a moment, unsure what answer to give. Random memories fly at her, but at loss for words, she answers him simply. "Not quite."
Marvel nods. "Understandable."
They finish their trays in silence. The bell goes off and all the Tributes file back into the gymnasium.
Over the duration of the next few days, nothing of interest happens. It's her nights that are much more eventful.
After dinner one evening, Cato and Clove go to sleep. She finds it hard to, and ends up on the living room couch, scrolling through re-runs on the television. She ends up picking an old movie about love, which she barely pays any attention to. She hears a door open and jerks her attention to the direction of it. Cato comes out of his room. He notices her on the couch, and she can tell his is debating to himself whether he should go back to his room or stay.
"It's fine. I won't gut you." Clove says.
She sees the old grin appear on his face, one she hasn't seen in awhile. He comes closer and takes a seat near her. "What are you watching?"
"I'm not even sure. You can switch it if you'd like." She sighs.
Cato glances up at her and they hold eye contact for just a moment. Long enough for her to see he hasn't forgotten a single thing. He reads her expression and instantly knows what she's pondering. "I know what you're thinking about."
She says nothing but gives him a slight nod.
"I'm sorry." He adds.
"Five years." She snaps. "It took you five years to say a sentance that you don't sound like you mean."
"I tried. You think your parents would let me imside your house after that?" He spits.
"Cato, no one in their right mind would let a traitor like you back in their house." She says angrily.
"Well I tried, okay?" He snaps.
She straightens up and lowers her voice, still using the same bitter tone. "I didn't want to see your face ever again. You couldn't keep that secret I had entrusted you with. You are the reason my only brother is dead."
For once he has nothing to say. A feeling of guilt tugs at his gut. Not the type where you feel the slightest bit bad, or the type you can easily brush off, but the type that knaws at you. The type that grows like an infection, because deep down he knows Clove is right. He did kill her brother. Not with his own hands, but the blood of her brother still upon them.
"You're right. I did kill your brother." He pushes the words out of his throat. The sentance had been formed awhile back, but never used, because Cato wouldn't come to terms with himself.
Tears sting at Clove's eyes. "He was my best friend Cato. It's not easy."
The hurt of seeing her cry and know there was nothing he could do was a different kind of pain. "You shouldn't have told me anything." He whispers.
Clove wipes her eyes. "I know."
He looks up at her upset face. "And I'm truely sorry."
She stares at him for a moment, before the words start rolling off her tongue. "I hate you Cato. I hate everything about you. But I hate myself more." She admits. His clear confusion makes her continue. "I hate myself for trusting you. But mostly, I hate myself loving you at one point."
He stares at her.
She takes a shaky breath in. "And I hate myself because I still truely love you."
