Even though Lorena had already been in uni for a whole year, starting another major meant her first day felt like a first day in uni fully. Not the first day of her second year. But from the very beginning, she knew that was her place. She loved the classes and felt sure being a teacher was what would make her happiest.
Apart from Fermín, of course. He had to miss more classes than ever and had even thought about dropping from uni. Not having Lorena's help, or Lorena by his side, was making things more complicated. But she convinced him to talk to his professors and ask to have fewer classes every year. It'd take him longer to finish the degree but it was more manageable. And it turned out to be the best solution.
"Are any of Fermín's friends single?", asked Marta, one of Lorena's classmates and friend, when they were out of their final class for the day.
"A few are. Maybe you should hang out with us one day and you can meet them".
"But are they all as dreamy as Fermín?", it was Natalia asking that question that made Lorena laugh.
"I don't know but they're good guys so that's something".
"I want what you have", told her Natalia, pointing at the door and Lorena looked to see what she meant.
A smile took over her face when she saw Fermín waiting there with a rose in his hand.
"It's not Valentine's Day", she told him, wrapping her arms around his neck to kiss him.
"I don't need an excuse to get a flower for my beautiful girlfriend".
"I've missed you", whispered Lorena before moving back to take the rose from Fermín's hand and smelling it. "Thank you".
"I've missed you more. But now you're spending a few days with me".
"I am!"
That was what kept happening. Fermín would be away for a few days and then he tried to make up for lost time with Lorena. It wasn't always easy but they knew it was going to happen and tried to just make the most out of every second together. Whether they were alone or accompanied by others.
Something that didn't change was Lorena attending Fermín's home matches but, one day, Gavi was no longer by her side in the stands because he had recovered from his injury and was back with the squad.
Gavi was a ball of nerves that day so Fermín offered to drive him to the stadium. Both he and Lorena tried to calm their friend down but it wasn't until they got to the stadium that Gavi felt fine.
And it was all because of what he saw Lorena wearing when she took her jacket off.
"You got the wrong shirt on", said Fermín, frowning at his girlfriend.
"I don't. It's Pablito's first day back with the squad so I want to support him by wearing his shirt".
"Awww, she loves me more than she loves you, Fermín", said Gavi, running to hug Lorena.
"I don't think wearing your shirt makes her love you more...".
"My biggest fan!"
Lorena shook her head, laughing at Gavi's jokes. But it was so good to see him be himself and smile. He needed to be relaxed before playing again.
"You're taking that off before we get home", whispered Fermín when he hugged Lorena.
"Jealous?", she teased.
"Stupidly jealous, yes. I feel like an idiot so help me out".
She bit her lip to hold a laugh but didn't torture Fermín further. Gavi played the last ten minutes of the match and once it ended, Lorena took his shirt off since she was wearing a tank top underneath and put her jacket back on.
"Better", said Fermín when he saw her after the match. Still feeling stupid for his jealousy.
That uni year felt longer than the first one somehow, even if it was the same amount of days. And when it ended, Lorena was ready to celebrate her good grades with Fermín, who had booked a table at her favourite restaurant.
"It's been a challenging year", he said.
"You could say".
"But it's shown me something".
"What is it?"
"That being with you doesn't just make my life better but it makes it have more sense. I no longer know what to do when I have to be away from you for a couple of days. So please never dump me", Lorena laughed but her eyes were shining. Fermín's words were so beautiful. "I don't want to go days without seeing you. I don't want to have to drive for an hour so we can only hang out for two or three hours. It's not enough".
"I know", she sighed. "But there's nothing we can do".
"Actually...", Fermín got up and offered his hand to Lorena who took it. "Let me show you something".
Fermín was so quiet on the way to the car and then during the drive too. It made Lorena a bit nervous.
"Everything ok, Fer?"
"Yes. I just need to show you something".
Soon they stopped at a house near the area where Gavi's house was. It wasn't a big house like the one Fermín lived in with his family but it was big enough. And it had a garden.
"What are we doing here?"
"I don't want to be away from you so...move in with me? Just you and me. No family, though they're always welcome to come visit. Especially while I'm away. I don't want you to feel lonely in such a big place. But otherwise...just you and me. Together".
"I like the sound of that", she said. "But please tell me you didn't buy a house. That's too much".
"I rented it. This isn't the house where we'll settle, just the place where we'll start that part of our journey. We have time to find the perfect one for when we get married, have children, adopt a few dogs, ...".
"You want all that with me?"
"I want everything with you, Lorena. Everything".
"I want that too. With you".
They got inside the house and started to daydream about decorations and moments they'd spend on each room. Since they didn't really have much there, they ended up lying down on the living room's floor on some pillows and covered by a blanket. And they fell asleep talking about the dreams they wanted to achieve together. And...that was the thing. They knew that while being together, all of it was possible.
The first day of that new life together would start when they woke up...and they were both ready for it.
