Tatum put a smile on her face as best she could. She really did try.But after about the 20th person came up to her and hugged her, she'd had enough. All families friends had been very clingy to her and she wasn't a fan. The one person she wanted to be clingy with her she wasn't talking to, to the point she turned off her phone and put it in Leah's room, instructing the blonde girl not to let her get it till tomorrow.
Midnight was soon, if everyone's drunken state was anything to go by. So she made her way across the room until she reached the patio doors, leading to her mums prized project; the garden.
She walked over to one of the garden chairs and sat down, letting out a much needed deep breath as she took in the cold winter wind, letting it hit her face. She heard the patio doors slide open behind her so she took a swig of the beer she was currently holding, preparing for yet another grilling about how great winning the Euro's was.
"Whatcha doing out here, mate?" She was instead greeted by the curious voice of her best friend who slowly made her way behind Tatum and wrapped her arms around the younger girls shoulders, hugging her softly and kissing the side of her head. Tatum had confided in Leah about the disagreement with Katie, needing to vent. Leah didn't give her opinion, but just let Tatum get out what she needed to, being the good best friend.
"It's loud in there."
"It is."
"Lots of people keep hugging me."
"They're just happy." Leah reassured, staying in the position she was in, hugging Tatum's shoulders.
Silence settled between the two, the only sound being the faint sounds of the party coming from inside.
"You heard anything from her yet?" Leah asked.
"I gave you my phone, how would I hear anything?"
Leah shrugged. "I know Katie, she's insistent. She always has her ways."
Tatum pursed her lips. "Yeah, well maybe she just doesn't want to, then."
Leah squeezed her arms a little bit tighter around Tatum. "Stop it. The girl is obsessed with you."
"Is it wrong to say maybe she should act like it then?"
"No." Leah said with a small laugh. "It's just a bump. It'll be sorted out and then a few years down the line you'll laugh, okay?"
"She's a dick." Tatum complained.
"She is. But she's you're dick."
Tatum's lips formed a smirk quickly. "Nah, my dick is much bigger than her."
Leah snorted and chuckled. "Nice." Turns out the blonde was much drunker than she thought, she would have usually moaned at Tatum's joke.
"Right, come on. The count down is in like 5 minutes." Leah said as she patted Tatum's shoulder and stood up straight. "I'm not kissing you but I'd still like you there."
Tatum nodded and angled her head to smile at Leah. "I'll be in in a second, just give me a minute." Leah smiled in response and patted the top of Tatum's head softly before turning around and walking towards the patio doors, the sliding noise indicating to Tatum that she had now retreated inside.
Tatum looked up to the sky, holding her bottle silently up to sky, a tradition she does at events as a cheers to her dad. "Happy new years, big man." She mumbled before taking another swig of her beer.
Hearing the patio doors slide open again, she rolled her eyes. "Mate I said I'd be in in a minute, stop ruining my vibe." She didn't hear a response, but did hear the doors slide shut. She smiled slightly that Leah listened and took a deep breath before leaning her elbows on her knees.
Tatum looked at the label on her beer, beginning to pick it off as she sat in silence. Feeling hands on her shoulders, she jumped and stood up, turning on her heels with a frown.
"Surprise."
"...what are you doing here?" Tatum asked when she seen Katie standing in front of her with a sheepish smile.
Katie didn't speak, but instead walked around the chairs so she was standing in front of the taller girl, tentatively reaching up and wrapping her arms around Tatum's shoulders, letting out a quiet sigh of relief when Tatum didn't push her away.
"You said...you said you weren't even the fifth choice. But you were wrong." Katie whispered, ducking her head slightly to make Tatum look in her eyes. "You're the first choice, always. I didn't realize so many things had happened, I was always just so focused on getting them done so we could enjoy our time together...I guess it didn't like, stick in my head or something. It has always, and will always be you before everything. Football included." Katie whispered before moving one of her hands to cup the back of Tatum's head, weaving her fingers through her hair softly. "Okay?"
Tatum nodded gently. "I'm sorry."
"Don't be. I needed the wake up call...Now, I really wanna kiss you...but the count down is gonna start in like 30 seconds, and there's a lot of people inside who are gonna miss you if we don't go inside, yeah?" Katie said, smile on her face as Tatum now wrapped her arms around her waist.
"Yeah." Tatum agreed.
Katie smiled and nodded before turning in Tatum's arms and lacing her fingers through Tatum's and dragging the brunette inside. "Excuse me." Katie shouted over the hustle of people now counting down. "Excuse me!" She spoke loudly as people blocked her way, eventually just giving them a gentle push till they moved out of her way. She smiled when she saw Molly, Ellie and Matty standing with Leah and her family in the center of the room. Pulling on Tatum's arm, the pair finally reached the group who turned to face the pair with smiles as they saw the girls standing hand in hand.
Tatum came up to stand behind Katie, wrapping her arm around the girls waist so they were resting low on her hips.
"..THREE!"
"TWO!"
"ONE!"
"HAPPY NEW YEAR!"
The crowd of people cheered and Katie turned in Tatum's arms, wasting no time in bringing a hand up to Tatum's chin and pulling the young girl down to her face so she can press her lips against her own.
Tatum could hear the cheers of those around them, all celebrating the new year coming in. But all Tatum could bring herself to care about right now was Katie's lips on hers. How the Irish woman's plump lips perfectly fit around hers. How she could feel the tip of her tongue slowly grazing across her bottom lip teasingly. How she could taste the mint from Katie's gum. How she could feel Katie's thumb grazing across her cheek bone as her hand remained on the side of her face. How she could feel Katie smiling into their kiss. How Katie arched her back closer to Tatum when she bit her bottom lip quickly. Everything she could think about, smell, taste, was Katie.
Her Katie.
"Right, lesbian's, there's other people here you know!" Tatum eventually heard Ellie's voice shout.
"And children."
"And Children!" She added at Matty's reminder.
Tatum pulled away from Katie with a smile before she was immediately pulled into a tight hug by Ellie. "This one will be better, yeah." Tatum mumbled as they hugged.
Tatum hugged all of her loved ones after Ellie, Katie following her example and hugging each of them once Tatum was finished. When it came to Leah, the blonde smirked and pulled Tatum into a hug.
"Told you she was obsessed."
