(No one's POV.)
Its been twelve years since the events of the previous chapter, both Haru and Roboco are now 17 years old, the former now being a pretty skilled detective in the Tokyo police office following after Roboco's footsteps.
(Haru's POV.)
It was a peaceful afternoon when I was dispatched to the upper floor of a small abandoned office building that was awaiting renovation, apparently, they received a tip that the violent android mercenary that we've been tracking down for weeks had just retreated to the building after completing a job that a crimeboss gave him, using it as a temporary base of sorts. And here I am, investigating whether or not the intel is real. Alone.
I had just finished climbing the stairs when I saw signs that someone was definitely living here, some scattered clothes and worn out android parts greeted me when I reached the second floor. Maybe just an android squatter?
The lights in the building weren't working and the windows were all boarded up, letting very little natural light in. I pulled out a flashlight from the pocket of my dark brown jacket and turned it on, allowing me to see the dark hallway that came just after the stairs.
Taking a deep breath, I started walking, heading towards one of the offices. Surprisingly there were still a few computers left, scattered around on the desks or on the floor.
And then it hit me, the unholy stench of whatever had been living and shitting all over the floor here. It could be from rats, skunks, birds, or whatever annoying pest that lives inside a building has probably contributed in some way to the awful smell that was invading my nostrils. I've investigated a dead body that has been out for over three weeks but not even that compares to the tarnation that is combined bird and rat shite that had been accumulating for at least a decade.
I let out a few coughs, it was that bad. Then I started exploring the place, if there was a squatter here, they're definitely an android, no human on the planet would think of living in a place like this. No matter how broke and desperate they are.
After a minute of walking around in this mess, I found something useful.
When I reached a group of desks in the center of the room, I found a duffle bag under one of them. Not just any old duffle bag though, a duffle bag containing weapons, cash, and of course, drugs. All of this lines up with that merc, he was hired to take out a competing dealer and steal his stash for the boss.
I coughed again, goddamnit. I swear I'll probably die if I stick around here for too long.
Just as I was thinking of calling it a day, I happened to point my flashlight at a bunch of footprints left on the shit-coated floor. Footprints that weren't left by me. Seems he heard me breaking into this place and left in a rush. If that was the case, why leave this stuff here?
Still haven't confirmed if he actually left the building though, for all I know he could be lurking in the dark in this very room with me.
I decided to follow the tracks, just to make sure it leads to an exit route. I really hope it leads to an exit route and not to my demise.
The tracks lead to a corner of the room, seems he knocked over a few stuff while running here because I see a few computer screens on the floor along the way. So that's what caused the ruckus I heard earlier when I broke in.
