"Are you bloody out of your mind? Did I just not say no one wants to be a runner." Newt stated, letting off my hand and backing away.
"But I do. How do I become one either way?"

"Even if you want to, I doubt they'll let you, I wouldn't let you either. It's too dangerous."
Newt looked frustrated.

"Because I'm a girl? Is that it?" I said, crossing my arms. I can't believe they won't let me go because I'm so-called "weak." guys and their stereotypes.

"No no that's not it-"
I didn't give him a chance to talk as I walked away. coming down the stairs,

I heard the wake-up call as gladers woke up rubbing their eyes and heading to the canteen to eat breakfast. I decided I might as well go too.

I grabbed a tray and gave it to a dark-skinned boy. As he filled it with eggs and bacon,

"Hey greenie, I didn't get a chance to say hi yesterday, Welcome to the glade." he smiled at me, handing me back my tray full of food.

"Thank you." I smiled back.

I searched for a seat in the canteen while ignoring the taunts of the other boys.

"Hey gorgeous, you can sit with us."
"Don't have a seat? You can sit on me."
Disgusting, haven't these guys seen a girl before? Oh, wait. They haven't.

I finally found Chuck sitting alone, shoving food into his mouth. "Hey, Chuckie." I smiled

"Hey Mei!" His voice muffled with food.
"What job do you think you want?" he asked

"Well I don't know, I don't know what I'm good at. But I think wanna be a runner." After finishing my sentence, I scooped some food into my mouth.

Chuck spit his food out in shock after he realized what I had just said.

"Really?! Are you sure? If you do become a runner, I'll get to show off to everyone that my best friend is a runner!" he smiled proudly at the thought, I giggled.

"Calm down, I'm not a runner yet," I remembered what Newt had said. Even if you want to, I doubt they'll let you, I wouldn't let you either. It's too dangerous.

I gripped my spoon angrily at the thought. Once I had finished my food, I saw Minho and some runners enter the maze once it opened.

When I was distracted, someone grabbed my shoulder. It was Alby.

"Hey greenie, it's time to try out for the jobs. See which ones you're good at," he ordered

I nodded as I put away my plate and headed to the first job I was assigned to try, a builder.

They assumed that since I was a girl, I wouldn't be good at physically demanding jobs. So, they wanted me to try the builder first to get rid of that option altogether.
