Lu Zhan seized the torch and approached the massive pit. Luo Zhen had never imagined digging such a pit or trap in this location. After all, the winter-hardened soil would have taken several days to dig through, even for the mighty orc warriors. However, with a level-eight fighter like Hei Yuan among them, it was a different story.
Luo Zhen had witnessed Hei Yuan effortlessly excavating the frozen soil, rendering it as soft as tofu in the hands of the formidable warrior. With Horn Bamboo monitoring the beast's movements, Hei Yuan had dug several deep pits in the spots marked by Luo Zhen. This formed the basis for the current plan to use these pits as traps to ensnare the beasts.
Observing the struggling monsters in the pit, Lu Zhan unfastened the giant net and, before the monsters could lunge, hurled the lit torches into the pit.
The intense heat forced the fire-fearing monsters to recoil, hastening the spread of the flames fueled by the dry grass, firewood, and resinous wood at the pit's bottom. Despite the low temperature, the flames quickly ignited the combustible materials. Thick smoke billowed from the pit as Heifu and his team securely fastened the giant nets over the pit entrances, making it difficult for the monsters to break through.
Soon, the odor of burnt flesh filled the air, nauseatingly distinct from the usual aroma of roasted meat.
"Try not to inhale these fumes," Hei Yuan cautioned, observing the growing pits.
The others, taking heed of his advice, raised their collars and stepped back, avoiding the acrid smoke.
"Are those monsters really gone?" Hei Ya pinched his own face in disbelief, seeking confirmation that this wasn't a dream. The pain in his cheek confirmed the reality of the situation.
Kakutake, seeing this, scolded him and rubbed his reddened cheek. Though he understood Hei Ya's skepticism, even he hadn't expected the eradication of the vast monster horde to be so straightforward. Apart from Hei Yuan's intimidating presence, their strategically placed traps had managed to ensnare most of the monsters, ensuring their demise in the fiery pits without any chance of escape.
"Boss?" An unfamiliar voice broke the calm, instantly putting the members of the Riyao tribe on high alert. A dozen wooden bows were swiftly drawn, bone arrows aimed at the source of the sound. It was as if any sudden movement would result in instant death for the perceived threat.
"It's really the leader of the river tribe," someone exclaimed, their voice filled with excitement and a hint of tears. Even to an outsider, the emotion in the voice was palpable.
"Hequan?" He Zhan spotted the sudden appearance of the group of people. Wanting to approach, he struggled with the stubbornness of his staghorn horse. Anxious and unaware of his own physical limitations, he tumbled onto the snow before regaining his balance.
Observing He Zhan's plight, Shan Qi, recognizing him as a once formidable warrior, quickly dismounted and rushed to his aid. Brushing the snow off He Zhan, Shan Qi ensured he looked presentable before rejoining his people.
Lu Zhan recognized the orc warriors from the Dahu tribe and signaled to Heifu and the others to lower their weapons. However, a sense of caution still lingered as they observed the approaching Hequan and his group. The Dahu tribe boasted a larger contingent of warriors compared to the Riyao tribe.
With little time to spare, He Zhan greeted his tribe despite his weakened state.
Although Hequan hadn't witnessed the Riyao tribe's battle with the monsters, he couldn't ignore the screams emanating from the burning pits. Despite his disbelief, Hequan had to acknowledge that these people before him had saved the Great Lakes tribe.
