I tried to put it out of my mind for now and go to sleep. The next morning I ran all kinds of errands until the sun set and I got ready for my mission. Very soon after there was a buzz at the front door and a males voice said only, "I'm here."
"Coming," I said back before heading down.
Coming out the front door, I almost missed him entirely, leaning against the building to my left. He straightened up, "Hey, Y/N, right?"
"That's me. It's Soul Eater, right? Or do you prefer Death Scythe?"
"Nah, Soul's good,"
I recognized him from our school days: dark red eyes, sharp teeth, his white blond hair laid flatter on his head and he was a little taller than when I last saw him, and now a few tattoos poked out of his jacket sleeves and collar. He had the same deep, dry, clipping voice.
"Okay, Soul, let's get going," I smiled, "We can take my car."
I started over to my SUV but Soul wasn't following, "Uh...no. We'll take my bike. It'll be faster."
I watched him walk over to a slightly beat-up orange motorcycle. "Uh...no," I said, echoeing what he said, "I'm not getting on that death trap."
Soul swung one leg over the bike, "So what? I'll meet you there—in a few hundred years?"
I sighed, "Fine, fine...just get on behind you?"
Soul smirked, "Unless you want to ride on my handlebars?"
I gave him the best scowl I could while also shakily throwing one leg over the seat and sitting behind him. "Hold on," Soul advised, a smirk still in his voice, before taking off. I had been resolved to not hold on to him, but the moment he laid on the throttle I was forced to put my arms around his waist. I tried to ignore how awkward it felt and how my face burned, which wasn't hard as we flew past cars, weaving back and forth.
We did get to the sanitarium in great time, but when I got off the bike I was dizzy and my stomach was flipping. "You okay?" Soul asked, even as he was striding for the doors.
"I'll be fine," I staggered after him.
We walked slowly through the sanitarium with flashlights. "I remember you from school," I said, conversationally.
"Oh, yeah?" Soul said, absent-mindedly, on the other side of the room.
"Yeah, I was a class under you, but I'm still really good friends with Maka,"
He turned to me now with recognition in his eyes, "No kidding. Who was your partner?"
It felt good to be having a real conversation with him. I grinned with pride, "Her name is Ruby. You should know her—she's a death weapon too, a gun."
"Gun?" Soul echoed. I blinked rapidly as he shined his flashlight straight in my face, "You're not a Scythe Meister?"
"Er...no. Maybe this is a bad time to tell you—I've never used a scythe," the last part came out as a pathetic squeak.
The look on Soul's face made my stomach drop—there was no sympathy. "Why pair us together then?!"
"I don't know. Lord Death insisted, ask him," I snapped, eyeing a padlock hanging from a nearby door.
"What is he thinking? That guys lost his marbles—if he's ever had them in the first place," Soul muttered, "I'm so out of here."
I paused in jiggling the padlock, "Out of here? What do you mean?"
"Exactly what I said. This blows. You coming or what?"
"Your boss said—" I choked on my voice as seething black ooze poured from the walls, glowing eyes blinking to life pair by pair.
"He's your boss too," Soul was saying, still striding for the door, "And you can tell him I'll be waiting for a meister who..."
He trailed off as he realized his exit was blocked. Shapeless oily creatures had covered every wall and slink across the floor towards us as we both backed towards the center of the room. I barely registered Soul crashing into the back of me. He slapped at my arm trying to get my attention,
"Fine, fine, you win,"
He slipped his hand in mine, before
Clang!
This made me snap out of it as I turned to the giant red and black scythe in my hand, "Fuck, you're heavy."
"We still have to soul bond," Souls voice echoed out of the scythe.
"I know that!" I snapped, "This isn't my first day as a meister."
"Really? Seems like it," Soul scoffed.
"Would you concentrate!"
"I am concentrating. You're the one not concentrating," Soul said, sounding almost bored, even as the shadow monsters were feet from us.
I yelped as a shadow licked at my foot, but closed my eyes and breathed. I pictured my soul and Souls, merging, vibrating on the same frequency. Then it clicked. I felt power, energy flowing through me—an overwhelming amount. "Whoa," I breathed.
I could lift Soul now, and lifted him so I could see his reflection in the blade where mine should be. He looked as charged and shocked as I felt.
I grinned, "Let's do this."
I started swinging. Shadows dissolved left and right with each swing. I could start to see the grimy concrete floor and walls again. But...
"Lord Death was so wrong. This is nothing like a giant sword!"
"Yeah, no, I'm nothing like a sword," Soul snapped back, "He said that? Not cool!"
Just then, one shadow launched at me, "Uh-oh!"
"Let me block it!"
"Seriously?!"
"Yep,"
I held him up, so the shadow bounced off his shaft. Soul didn't even flinch. I rammed the butt of the hilt into the shadow monster, knocking him back,
"Wrong end!"
and swung the blade straight down into it.
"Okay, not bad," Souls conceded.
I spun him over my head, before using the momentum to wipe out the rest in one clean swing. "Okay, someone's getting fancy," Soul muttered, with a hint of a smile in his voice, "Thats all of 'em."
But I tightened my hold on his shaft, "Don't change back just yet."
"Why n—Oh, no, you're not serious," he moaned as I strode over to the padlocked door. I lifted him over my head and sliced through the chain in one clean swing.
The doors burst open and children flooded out. I left Soul and guided them out the door, letting them thank me and cry in relief. When I turned back I saw the room was littered with the shadow demons souls. Soul was already swallowing one. I crossed my arms over my chest,
"Whenever you're finished..."
He sighed, "Give me a minute. I think I've earned this."
"You're not going to eat all of them, are you?"
He gave me a fangy, lop-sided smirk, "Why? You want some?"
When I just shrugged, he muttered, "Guess my eyes are too big for my stomach anyway."
We didn't speak the whole way back to my apartment, but I clung to Soul a little tighter, letting my head rest in his back. When we got back to my place I turned for the door, "Well, it's been fun—"
"Tell me you felt that too."
I looked back to see Soul staring at me, the first time I hadn't seen him either pissed off or with that infuriating smirk.
I swallowed, "Yeah, of course I did."
"I haven't felt a soul bond that strong since..." he trailed off.
"Maka?"
"And Ruby for you?"
"Yeah," I said, quietly, "We don't make such a bad team after all."
There was that smirk again, "And you're not so bad for not being a Scythe meister."
"I'll take it," I laughed, before turning back to my apartment, "See you around, Soul Eater."
