No one's POV
The next time Soul saw Maka he asked about Y/N. He hoped he didn't sound like he was too worried, give her the wrong idea...
"She was fine. Woke up after noon and then Ruby came and brought her home...You seem to like her,"
Damn.
"Yeah, she's cool," he shrugged, "For a gun meister and a lightweight."
"Sounds like you two worked together fine in the sanitarium though,"
He gulped, rubbing the back of his neck, "What all did she tell you about that?"
Maka laughed, "She said that you were unhelpful the whole time..."
Soul wilted.
"...But you got the job done. That's all I meant," she continued, "Why?"
"No reason. You find our witch yet?"
"I'll tell you when I do. Don't change the subject. You should ask her out,"
"I don't need help from you, Maka. I'll ask out who I want to ask out,"
"Oh, yeah? When was the last time you went on a date?"
He felt his face burn, "I've gone on loads of dates. And I could ask you the same question. If you try to set me up with one of your friends, maybe I should set you up with one of mine."
"I know all your friends, Soul. Your friends are my friends,"
"All I'm saying is maybe you wouldn't be so grumpy if you got laid,"
"Shut up, Soul!"
A few days later, Soul found himself walking to the Death Room. School had never been for him, but now that it was many years later, he could look back at good memories—and be very grateful those days are over. Now all he had to worry about was being the coolest Death Scythe ever and then there was—
"Y/N?"
She stood in the Death Room with her back to him, but turned when he said her name, fixing those lovely E/C eyes on him. Instead of greeting him, she turned back to Death,
"What about Soul again?"
"You break my sons heart and you think I'll lend you my Scythe?" Deaths usually bouncy, cheery voice held something close to malice, probably as close as he got.
"I broke his heart?! He broke up with me!" she cried.
"Are you talking about Death the Kid?" Soul butted in, "You're dating him?"
"Was dating him," she corrected him, "Apparently I'm not pretty enough for him."
"I know 'im. We're friends,"
She scoffed, "Yeah, I know. Makes sense too, you're both dicks."
Lord Death spoke before Soul could, "No matter. I'm pairing you with Cornelius. Black Star and Oxe will join you too. Off you go!"
"Yes sir. Thank you," she turned to leave, "See you around, Soul."
"See yah—and Y/N?" Soul stayed facing forward, but he felt her pause just behind him, "Kids an idiot. I think you're really pretty."My POV
"Pretty? He said you were pretty? Are you sure?" Ruby gaped at me.
I didn't hide the fact that I was a little offended, "Positive. Why? I'm pretty."
"Of course you are, but that doesn't seem like Soul," Maka corrected, "Maybe he was gonna say 'pretty cool.'"
"'Really pretty cool'? I don't think so," I sat back and crossed my arms over my chest.
The girls had dragged me out to the mall once my mission had ended in success. We sat at a coffee kiosk, waiting for the others to show up who would include Black Star and Tsubaki, Kid and the Thompson sisters, and—somehow even worse than seeing my ex—Soul.
Soul, Black Star, and Tsubaki showed up just then. The guys lagged behind, shoving each other, laughing, and shouting, while Tsubaki gingerly sped ahead of them and sat between Ruby and I as if finally reaching safety. She said Kid and the sisters would be a while still, so we decided to start off through the mall. The ladies wasted a lot of time in some clothing stores, the guys checked out some new sneakers, video games, and electronics. Then we wandered into the arcade.
I had gotten caught up in a few rounds of skee ball with Ruby, comfortable with the fact that the guys were on the other side of the arcade engaged in a racing game, but that was until I spotted Soul coming towards me out the corner of my eye.
So did Ruby.
"I'm gonna hit the little girls room,"
I bared my teeth at her, "Oh, don't you dare."
She shrugged, "What? A girls gotta pee."
She left without waiting for an answer. I forced myself to turn to greet Soul. Behind him I spotted the racing game smashed to pieces with a mortified Maka and Tsubaki lecturing Black Star.
"What happened?" I laughed.
"Oh, that?" Soul cast a quick glance over his shoulder like it was a little thing, "Black Star gets really competitive."
He inserted a few coins into our skee ball machine, "Here. I'll take Ruby's place."
I could only stammer in indignation, so he continued, "I have to warn you though. I'm pretty great at this."
He rolled his first ball—30 points.
"Not bad," I rolled my first ball.
50 points.
Soul gave a low whistle.
"Not feeling so confident now, are you, Soul? Or should I say Mr Eater under such formal circumstances as a high-stakes skee ball game?"
"Feeling just fine, L/N...And my last name is Evans for your information," he added, bitterly.
"Soul Eater Evans? Wow, and I thought your name couldn't get stupider,"
He rolled another—20 points. I paused with my ball in my hands,
"Listen, I never thanked you for that night. I was feeling like shit and you cheered me up,"
He gave me a devilish grin, "Don't mention it—Now quit stalling and go!"
50 points.
Soul picked up his next ball, "So that's why you were messed up? Kid dumped you?"
"Yeah. Thanks for what you said the other day too—"
"Hey, you don't need—"
"—but I don't need your pity compliments," I finished.
Souls ball rolled back down the lane towards him and landed at his feet, "What?"
"I have plenty of self-esteem without you needing to lie to me to make me feel better,"
He laughed weakly, "I didn't lie to you. I genuinely find you attractive. Does that bother you?"
Yes.
"No,"
"Good,"
"Good," I rolled my last ball without looking.
50 points.
"Good game, Evans," I walked past him, patting him on the shoulder, then past Kid who had been watching us with his mouth hanging open for who knows how long,
"Why don't you take a picture, Kid? It'll last longer."
