No Ones POV
"Ruby? I've decided something,"
"What is it?" Ruby panted.
Maka moaned, "I don't like snowshoeing."
"Well, lucky you, we're back at the—"
"Ruby, get down," Maka hissed.
"What? Why? We're almost there,"
Maka grabbed her and shoved her down into the snow, "No, get down."
Ruby followed Maka's wide-eyed stare to see the resort surrounded by masked men.
"They're all witches,"
"Where are the others?"
"I don't know. Y/N and Soul went up the mountain," she focused again, "I can sense another witches soul up there too. This one is much stronger."
"We have to get to them,"
Just as Ruby was saying this, they watched a witch drag out the resort manager and throw her into the snow. Some witches crowded around her, some poured into the resort.
"We have to protect everyone here first," Maka said, "But how...?"
"You'll have to use me,"
"You're crazy," Maka hissed, "I can't use a long range weapon. I don't know how!"
A few screams from the resort made her jump, "F-Fine, just give me the easiest to aim and fire."
"Sniper rifle," Ruby chose, transforming and landing in Makas hands, "Lowest recoil of any of my forms and just look through the scope and pull the trigger. You can't miss."
Bang!
"You missed,"
Through the scope, Maka could now see the witches turn their sights on her and start speeding towards them. Before she knew what was happening, Ruby was back in her human form, and was dragging Maka to her feet. They hurriedly detached the snowshoes and raced into the woods, getting enough of a head start before diving into the brush. Maka tried to be as small as possible, watching the snow melt in front of her face from her warm breath. The crunching of snow got closer and closer as the henchmen searched for them.
"What do we do?" she whispered to Ruby, half expecting her to suggest she try shooting again. She was certain they could hear her heart pounding.
"You have to get to Soul and Y/N. Wait until I draw them off, then run,"
"Wait, what?" Maka hissed, as Ruby repositioned to her haunches, "Ruby, no—"
But she shot up, "Over here!"
All the witches spun on her, but before anything else happened, two figures dropped down from the trees, one hollering, "YAHOO!"
One slashed through half the witches with a sword, the other one shot the other half with duel pistols. Maka popped up next to Ruby,
"Kid! Black Star!"
"Ladies,"
"Thanks for the distraction, Rubes. Just what we needed,"
The men turned to face the resort as another group of henchman came roaring towards them. "Where's Y/N?" Kid asked.
"Her and Soul are on the mountain," Maka said, not missing the way Kid stiffened at her partners name, "We think they're in trouble."
"You two go help them, we'll take care of these clowns," Black Star said, turning his back.
"Good luck," said Maka.
"Stay safe, you two," Tsubacki replied from Black Stars hand.My POV
"She's catching up," Soul warned me as we flew down the mountain, back on my board, Soul still in my hands.
"Yes, I see that!" I snapped.
"For what it's worth, you've really got the hang of this!"
"I think the pounding adrenaline has something to do with that!" I said, "I'm gonna try something. Hang on!"
"Hang on?" Soul echoed, incredulously, "You hang on!"
After all this time, I've never gotten the right lingo down. "You know what I mean!"
I slammed his blade into the snow in front of me, letting it snag and spin me around, crashing Souls handle into the witch coming up fast behind me. She tumbled head over feet down the rest of the mountain, before crashing into the snow pile at the bottom.
"Nice," Soul laughed as I coasted down to the bottom myself.
"Thanks, but I thought—"
I was interrupted by another magic blast hitting Soul and throwing me back a few feet.
"You okay?"
"Don't make me laugh," Soul smirked from the blade.
The next moment another blast hit, this time landing me on my back. The witch had recovered way too quickly and now hammered down on us, striking Soul again and again.
"Are you okay?" I asked again.
With each blow he was wincing more and more, but he still said, "I'm fine. I can take it. Just focus on coming up with a plan."
"Okay, I'm thinking. I'm sorry,"
"Don't be. It's my job to protect you, remember? Beside I lo—"
Bang!
A bullet hit a tree near us, spraying bark. The witch spun around to see Maka—firing Ruby. She shot again, hitting another tree on my other side. She had...terrible aim...but it had distracted our attacker.
I jumped up and hit her in the back hard with Soul, and she went flying again. Maka ran up to us, "Are you guys okay?"
"Soul took a bit of a beating, but we're okay I think,"
"Great! More company!" the witch was singing, "More friends to play with!"
She surged for us, along with a dozen masked henchman pouring from the treeline.
"Wanna switch?" I asked Maka.
"Gladly,"
I tossed Soul and she tossed Ruby. We caught our correct weapons simultaneously and I started taking out the henchman one by one while Maka started swiping at the witch. With her expert hands, our friend didn't even have a chance to counterattack.
Even better, Black Star and Kid appeared, "Need some help?"
Kid joined me in taking out the henchman, while Black Star came alongside Maka. "Let's soul link," she said.
"Right,"
I watched out the corner of one eye as her and Black Star linked up and attacked at the same time. The witch was down. Her henchman ran for the hills.
As more meisters arrived, our weapons changed back.
"Everyone okay?" Kid asked.
"We're fine," Maka said.
"I'm okay, thanks to Soul," I said, turning to him, but Soul had lost all color in his face, "Soul, you're okay, right?"
"Stop asking that! I'm fine!...I am going to pass out though,"
And he dropped.
