"Alastor Moody. Ex-Auror, Ministry malcontent, and your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher," the professor introduced himself, writing his name on the board. "I am here because Dumbledore asked me. End of story, goodbye, the end. Any questions?"
The entire class remained silent, staring at the unhinged professor. "When it comes to the Dark Arts, I believe in a more practical approach," he continued, justifying his actions. "But first, who can tell me how many Unforgivable Curses there are?"
"Three, sir," Hermione quickly answered.
"And they are so named?"
"Because they are unforgivable. The use of any one of them will—" Hermione continued, stuttering slightly as she discussed the dark topic.
"—will earn you a one-way ticket to Azkaban, correct. The Ministry says you're too young to see what these curses do. I say otherwise! You need to know what you're up against! You need to be prepared."
From the other side of the classroom, Ophelia and Theo were practically dozing off, chewing gum and ignoring the professor. They only paid attention when, out of nowhere, Moody yelled at Theodore for sticking his old gum under the table.
"You need to find another place to put your chewing gum besides the underside of your desk, Mr. Nott!" he yelled with his back turned to the students. Ophelia and Theo exchanged confused looks, wondering how the teacher had seen them when he wasn't even looking in their direction.
"No way... The old codger can see out the back of his head," Theo whispered to Ophelia, making her laugh.
"And hear across classrooms!" Moody quickly turned around, throwing the white chalk he was using at Theo, who managed to avoid it just in time. Ophelia laughed even more, trying to hide her amusement by lowering her head on her desk.
"So which curse shall we see first?... Miss Black!" Moody's sudden shout caught Ophelia's attention, and she sat up straight.
"Yes?"
"Stand up. Give us a curse."
"Well, Mr. Weasley told me about one... The Imperius Curse."
"Oh, yes, Mr. Weasley would know all about that. Gave the Ministry quite a bit of grief a few years ago. Perhaps this will show you why." Moody walked towards his desk and took out a small spider from one of the jars. He approached Ophelia.
"Show me your palm." Ophelia furrowed her brows, looking at him questioningly.
"Why—"
"Show me your palm, or I will place the spider on your head." Ophelia rolled her eyes at the threat but obeyed. Jokes on him, she had no problem with creatures, except snakes... oddly enough, considering she was in Slytherin.
Once the professor put the creature in her palm, Ophelia started cooing at it as if it were the cutest of pets.
"Hello, lovely little beauty," she smiled at the spider crawling on her arm.
"Hold it still, Black. Engorgio!" The spider doubled in size. "Imperio!" As soon as he cursed it, the spider flew into the air, following the professor's wand movements. "Don't worry. It's completely harmless." He flew it over to Ron's face, who immediately looked like he was about to cry. "If she bites, she's lethal." He looked over at Draco, who was laughing at Ron's scared expression. "What are you laughing at?"
In an instant, the spider was crawling over Draco's face, and he started to yell for Goyle to get it off.
"Talented, isn't she? What should I have her do next? Jump out the window? Drown herself?" He demonstrated the extent of the Imperius Curse. "Scores of witches and wizards have claimed that they only did You-Know-Who's bidding under the influence of the Imperius Curse. But here's the rub: How do we sort out the liars?" The room stayed quiet as they considered the power of these curses.
"Another, another. Up, up." Neville hesitantly raised his hand. "Come on. Longbottom, is it? Up. Professor Sprout tells me you have an aptitude for Herbology."
"There's the... Cruciatus Curse," he said unsurely.
"Correct, correct. Come, come. Particularly nasty. The torture curse." He brought Neville to his desk where the spider was. He then performed the spell right in front of him. "Crucio!"
The spider started audibly screeching and squirming in pain. Ophelia cringed at the sight, trying to look away. She hated seeing a creature tortured just for a demonstration.
Seeing Neville's face contort in displeasure, Ophelia wanted to speak up, but Hermione beat her to it. "Stop it! Can't you see it's bothering him? Stop it!" she yelled, exasperated. The professor came back to his senses and quickly stopped, moving the tortured spider in front of Hermione.
"Perhaps you could give us the last Unforgivable Curse, Miss Granger... No?" Hermione shook her head, looking away. It was the first time Hermione Granger didn't want to answer a question.
The professor nodded in fake understanding and suddenly cast the curse. "Avada Kedavra!" A green light flashed, and in less than a second, the spider was dead. "The Killing Curse. Only one person is known to have survived it, and he's sitting in this room." Everyone's eyes turned to Harry.

Ophelia couldn't get the last curse out of her mind... the killing curse. That's how her mother met her end. One moment she was there, and then she just wasn't. No final goodbyes, no tears, just death. Gone.
"Brilliant, isn't he? Completely demented, of course, and terrifying to be in the same room with, but he's really been there, you know? He's looked evil in the eye," Ron gushed as they all left the classroom.
"There's a reason those curses are unforgivable," Ophelia said in a cold voice, shutting Ron up.
"To perform them in a classroom... I mean, did you see Neville's face?" Hermione continued as they headed down the stairs. Harry tapped her shoulder to get her to stop talking and pointed at Neville, who was standing by the corner of the stairs, looking out a window.
"Neville?" Ophelia said softly but didn't get the chance to comfort him as Mad-Eye came waltzing in, grabbing Neville's shoulder.
"Son? Are you all right? Come on. We'll have a cup of tea. I want to show you something," he said, being oddly nice as he walked Neville back up the stairs.
