Sophie woke up to several different voices. She saw the Collective, or what remained of the Collective, and Grady and Edaline.
And then her dream rushed back to her.
"I met with Elysian!" Sophie said, sprinting out of bed,
"How did it go?" Mr. Forkle asked quietly,
"Elysian told me things," Sophie replied, her gaze flashing angrily at him. He'd lied to her- again. He could've told her that she had to sacrafice herself.
"What did she tell you?" Mr. Forkle asked,
"She told me about a sacrafice," responded Sophie grumpily,Mr. Forkle looked like he was going to ask who, but it looked like he already guessed.
"You." He said, his voice suddenly thick,
"Yes- and you lied to me! She said that it was an ancient prophecy and-"
"Sophie, I had no idea of this. Neither did the Black Swan. I had no idea you had to sacrafice yourself, and... that is very unfortunate..." Mr. Forkle said, trailing off, his eyes flickering with so much sadness and grief that Sophie belived him.
"Well, the prophecy says I do, but there's no way... to change it, right?" Sophie asked, even though the question was dumb,
"No. We cannot change our destiny, we just have to have the courage to know what it is, and accept it." Mr. Forkle replied,
"And I'm sorry to hear that you have to sacrafice yourself. If I could do it for you, I would," Juline said, her eyes slightly glassy, but Edaline was sobbing by than, and she kept whispering: "I can't! I can't!". And Grady had to wrap his arms around her to keep her from collapsing of emotion. Grady himself was visibly angry, meanwhile Mr. Forkle seemed like he was trying to decide how to process the news.
"You can't, so I'll just have to do this. And I'll sacrafice myself knowing I did the right thing." She said,
"Your courage never ceases to amaze me," Mr. Forkle said with a sad smile,Mr. Forkle and Juline turned to leave, but before she let them go, she had to do something. Something for her friends.
"Wait," Sophie said,
"What?" Juline asked,
"I need to request something: Please, please don't tell my friends this. I don't want them to feel bad over me."Both adults nodded and Mr. Forkle grabbed his pathfinder and the light whisked them away.
"Sophie... I can't lose another daughter..." Edaline sobbed,
"You know, I'd very much like to live, too. But what I have to do is what I have to do." Sophie told her adoptive mother, trying to lighten the mood,
"Well, Sophie, I think you're very brave. You didn't even need to process this, you were ready." Edaline told her, drying her tears.
"I think... I'll see Fitz and Biana," She told her parents, and they both nodded. As Sophie went out, she could see Silveny, Greyfell, Luna and Wynn out. She almost wanted to ask them to let her ride on them, but she would never risk the alicorns' safety.
SOPHIE OKAY? Silveny transmitted loudly,
I'm okay, Sophie assured her, but Silveny must have noticed the edge to her mental voice,
NEED SILVENY FLY? asked Silveny,
No, I'm just going to see Fitz, Sophie told her,
FITZ SILVENY FRIEND! WANT TO SEE FITZ! Silveny said,
I'll take you to see him another day, She promised her,
OKAY. ANOTHER DAY! Silveny bellowed,
SOPHIE SAD? Silveny asked,
No, I'm okay, She said, but Silveny must've caught the edge to her mental voice,
WHERE KEEFE? Silveny asked, and Sophie winced. Keefe was gone. Up and gone. Gone. And those thoughts brought a tear rolling down her cheek. Silveny definitely noticed because she asked,
KEEFE GONE? Silveny asked, her mental voice full of grief,
Yes, Sophie replied, grief hitting her hard. Keefe's death had been her fault. Her fault,
Her fault,
Her fault,
Her fault,She shoved the thoughts away, knowing that guilt was dangerous. She shoved it deep, deep, deep away, and she could regret after she met with Fitz and Biana. But she needed to stay strong, for herself and for everyone. How was she supposed to sacrafice herself if her mind broke. It didn't make sense. She had to be strong. And so, Fitz and Biana. She had to make sure they were okay.
She ran at high speed, building momentum for teleportation. Just as she was running out of breath, Sophie, using her momentum, opened the dark void. She slipped in, and pictured Everglen with all details, which was easy thanks to her photographic memory.
And so, Sophie was at Everglen. Whatever was there was waiting for her.
