As Everglen came into view, she went in through the grand gates and knocked on the door. The person who answered was Della.
Della looked... quite awful. She had bags under her eyes and a tear stained face. Her hair was messed up and instead of the fancy dresses she wore, she was wearing a simple green gown this time.
"Hello, Sophie," Della greeted her, doing her best to hide the emotion in her voice.
"Hello," Sophie said, giving her a hug, Della returned it.
"Are you here to see Fitz and Biana?" asked Della, pulling away,
"Yes," Sophie said,
"They aren't in best condition so just... be careful." Della warned, and it was probably about Fitz. She led Sophie up the stairs and Biana's room came into view. And instead of her mother, she had no bags under her eyes, and she looked ready for visitors. Except that her eyes were slightly glassy and were sad and she was a bit pale.
"Hi," Biana said, giving Sophie a hug. Sophie hugged her friend back, sinking into it.
"Hey, I just wanted to see how you're holding up," Sophie told her friend, and Biana led her in. Fitz was looking out the window, pounding his fist against it.
"It feels so... empty. Without Keefe." Biana said, sighing,
"I know. And Tiergan..." Sophie choked off, and tears welled in her eyes.
"I... didn't know him that well but I understand what it's like to lose someone." Biana empathized,
"Thanks." She said to Biana,She drifted off to her own thoughts as Fitz's pounding grew. And his angry shouting leveled up.
"Keefe's dead! Gone! And he'll think I hate him! But I don't! I just wanted my best friend and mentor back!" Fitz cried, tears streaming down his face. He turned to look at Sophie, and she had a sinking feeling she knew what was coming.
"Fitz-" She started,
"Stop! It's your-" Fitz interrupted, but was interrupted himself. But she knew how the sentence ended. It's your fault.
"Stop that, Fitz. It's a dangerous game you're playing. You realize that if..." Biana trailed off, looking at her.
That if Sophie's mind breaks, no other mind can be healed. She couldn't let this break her. Yet it was her fault all the same.
But Fitz didn't stop. And she wasn't sure she could handle it."It's your fault! It's your fault Keefe's dead! He's gone because of you! He protected you! You're not worth my best friend! He doesn't deserve a "pretend leader" like you! You failed! It's your fault!" Fitz yelled, and Biana couldn't interrupt this time. Her voice wasn't loud enough to overpower Fitz's yelling. And the truth was, it was her fault.
Her fault Keefe was dead.
Her fault because Keefe protected her.
She had failed to protect Keefe.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault. She tried to cut the train of thought, but it didn't stop.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault. She heard Fitz and Biana faintly. Fitz was still yelling about how it was her fault. And it was. It was her fault. Keefe, the love of her life, was dead because of her. Keefe was an amazing, funny and kind person who deserved better than her. He deserved Biana. Or Linh. Or even Marella. Anyone but her. Even Stina was more deserving than Sophie. At least Keefe didn't have to sacrafice himself to her.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.
Her fault.Suddenly, she could feel a sharp tug on her shoulder, but her eyes couldn't fully focus. She could see bits and pieces, but not enough to make sense of the world around her. Only one thought was circling in her head: Her fault.
"Sophie, snap out of it. It isn't your fault." A voice that sounded like Biana's said. She couldn't even hear properly now.
She felt tears slip from her eyes. The truth was, it was her fault. In every way.
"Sophie, what I said was only because I was angry. I regret it, Sophie, because the truth is, it isn't your fault." Fitz said, the "isn't" helped, but not enough.
She felt peices shattering around her. She could see memories breaking. She could feel her world collapsing. And she didn't try to stop it, because she deserved it. She would stay in the nook forever, safe and happy.
Because the truth was, it was her fault.
And with that, her brain collapsed in on itself, and she could hear voices calling for her to wake up, but she collapsed into the frenzy.
