Linh P.O.V.
The voice was Keefe's. Linh knew that. But why would say 'Tam, lift a veil of shadowvapor.'. It just didn't make sense. Tam and Keefe basically hated each other. Yet when Keefe had died, Tam had cried harder than she'd ever seen him. And now, when Sophie's mind was broken- with possibly no way to get her back, no less, everything was so fragile. Yes, she didn't like Rayni. And yes, Sophie had started ignoring her after the latest Neverseen attack on her and Fitz and after she was revealed to be unmatchable but Sophie still cared. And she'd even gotten back to their friendship. Sophie had done so much for them, she'd brought Tam and Linh back from Exillium to Foxfire and... she was a true friend.
And now she might be gone forever, thinking Linh hated her.
Tears welled in her eyes as she thought of how she'd treated Sophie. She'd joined Stina, Marella and Maruca's group but she was still distant with Sophie and with her mistrust of Rayni she probably looked like she hated Sophie. And she didn't and wasn't as close to Stina as Marella was. Marella was nice, but Stina... not so much. And Maruca was fine too. But she didn't hate Sophie, and when Sophie came back- if she did, Linh would apologize immediately. Sophie deserved it.
As she was lost in her thoughts, she realized Tam had already lifted a veil of shadowvapor. She fully snapped out of her thoughts when she heard Sophie's ear-splitting screeches. And with those screeches, the tears she'd been holding back spilled over.
She wiped them away before she whispered, "What now?"
"We'll see soon enough," Mr. Forkle said quietly, choking slightly on the words. As Sophie's wails died down, she looked outside. It was already sunset.
"Well, well-" Keefe was cut off by the screams from everyone, except Mr. Forkle.
"Okay, now that you know that I'm here, let's talk!" Keefe exclaimed happily,
"Dude, this is no time to make jokes! Sophie's gone 'cause of you!" Fitz shoved Keefe, but Keefe wasn't moved. Fitz had gone right through Keefe, Linh realized. At first, Linh had a crush on Fitz. But when she realized Fitz liked Sophie, she was in despair. So then her attraction moved toward Keefe. So nice hair, so kind in general. She'd told Marella that she liked Keefe, and she thought she might actually get together with him. Turns out not. Sophie and Fitz broke up and Sophie got together with Keefe. So now, Keefe was out of her options. And then Linh had realized... she was in a love triangle, like Sophie had been. She had two options, Fitz and Wylie, and she really didn't know who to choose. She knew Wylie liked her, but did she like Wylie back? But Fitz...
She cut off that train of thought, because, well, it was selfish considering what Sophie was going through.
And when her head shifted back to focus mode, she saw that Fitz was still arguing with Keefe, but everyone else was lost in their own thoughts, even Mr. Forkle. It was probably Keefe's doing so that no one could hear what they were saying and were tuned out. Looked like Linh had fought it. But she still pretended to be lost. She knew it was selfish, but she wanted to hear what they said.
"I was with Sophie! You stole her from me! She was mine!" Fitz shouted fiercely,
"People aren't yours, Fitz. Sophie isn't mine, either. Even if Sophie is with me now, she isn't mine." Keefe hissed,
"You? Do you think Sophie can be with you, now that you're dead? Of course not! She's going to be with me, because, well, I'm alive. You're not, and I obviously grieve your loss. You were my best friend and you are amazing. But if we're being realistic, Sophie can't be with you anymore, so the only person she'll choose is me!" Fitz said calmly,
"Listen, Fitzy, you've never actually loved Sophie, have you? You've only ever wanted to be with her because she's beautiful and powerful and you wanted to be with her to catch up with her. To know that you were in love with someone amazing. But that isn't really the case, is it? You don't love Sophie, Fitz. I could tell it from the moment you two got together. And Sophie was attracted to you, but she never loved you. The only person she loved was me. I could sense it, and I didn't know if Sophie would be with me, 'cause she was too distracted by her silly crush on you she never noticed the love she had for me until I left and Ro told her I love her. It doesn't work that way, and you can't argue that she was yours when you loved her. Tell me this, when Sophie decided that she couldn't reveal her biological mother to you, and she still wanted to be with you and hoped you could stand being a bad match, you left her, didn't you? But if you'd actually cared about her and loved her, you would have been able to stand being a bad match, right? If you'd respected her choices and actually loved her, you wouldn't have left her just because she was a bad match, right?" Keefe rattled, and Fitz was trembling at the end."Admit it to yourself, Fitzy. You'll be at peace with yourself if you do that. You'll find your person, if you are destined to have a person." Keefe persuaded.
"I... don't love Sophie," Fitz said, taking in a shaky breath. But after he said those words, he looked peaceful. And he whispered them to himself."Feeling better?" Keefe asked,
"Yes. Thank you. Now... are you going to heal my friend Sophie?" Fitz asked,
"I will."And with those words, Linh was swept into darkness.
