Maya's pov:
I walk towards the day care with my headphones on listening to 'Florida!!!' by Taylor and Florence. Oh how I love these women.
Everyday, it feels surreal to be here, in the USA. It's been a year since I've been living here. I moved from India for my eleventh grade on scholarship and have been staying here ever since.
"Little did you know your home's really only a town you're just a guest in."
Four months ago I started working in 'Barnes and Babbles', a nursery where I work as a care giver, or a babysitter part time. I didn't want to burden my parents with all the cost of my living so I started earning a little.
Mind you, the pay isn't much but it covers my basic needs, that's all I need right now. And the children are amazing, they're adorable, all of them.
"Goodmorning, Thea!" I greet going to hug the woman. Thea's the business owner. She graciously provided me the job after I looked after her two kids, Mia and James, a couple months ago. She's the neighbour of my uncle, where I'm living currently.
Smiling she exclaims, "Goodmorning! The children were asking about you."
"Oh were they? Am I that missed?" I ask picking Mia up who was hugging my legs. "Hi sweetie." She hides her face in my shoulders making me giggle.
"Maya! Want to play a game with us?" James, Mia's twin brother runs up to me with his bag of blocks.
"C'mon let her breathe for a second." Aria bumps his shoulders making her way. He glares at her and I laugh watching the exchange.
I set Mia down ruffling her hair. "Sure buddy. But first, would you all like a present?" All the seven kids in front of me cheer and their eyes visibly light up.
I sit down getting to their level and open up my bag, "It's just a little something that I made when I thought of my little kiddos." I remove the bracelets and the little paintings I made of them. They all gasp and a series of oo's and aah's could be heard.
"Maya...you didn't have to go through so much trouble." Thea says sitting besides me.
"It's no problem, I just love them so much, I had to make them something."
"First me!" Mia jumps and holds her hand out in front of me to tie the bracelet around. "Thank you Maya, you're the best!" I giggle and move on to the rest.
"This one's for Sher." The six year old boy looks stunned as I tie the bracelet around his wrist.
"H-how did you make it?" He asks turning it around.
"Oh I'll teach you someday! Would you like to learn?" He nods his head quickly. "I'll teach you buddy."
Turn by turn I give them all their little gifts. They happily talk among themselves comparing their bracelets and portraits with one another.
"Thea, I wanted to talk to you about something." I ask her when we're a little away from the kids.
She nods saying, "Go on."
"My senior year will start next Monday. I wouldn't be able to come in the mornings then. Is there any way I can continue after school? It's totally okay if n-"
"Are you kidding, Maya? Ofcourse you can come after school. You know the nursery's open all day and all the kids of this shift are here atleast till seven pm. I don't see a problem. Plus you're one of the best care giver I have, the kids love you, you can come whenever as long as you do your four hours."
"Ofcourse. You don't have to worry about that, I'll complete the work."
"There will be a couple new faces for you who are dropped off at a later time. They can take some time to adjust but other than that I don't see any worries."
"Great! I'll try my darnest to gain their trust as well." I really will, I hope they'll find me tolerable.
"I'm sure they'll love you. Come now, we don't want them to get bored without their favourite Maya." She says making me grin. I join the kids again to play with them.
A/N: please read atleast till chapter 6, I'm sure you'll love it as the story progresses.
