"Hello," I say, shaking the parent's and the girl's hand. "Sorry for the wait. I'm Miss Moore, I'll be your English teacher for the year."
I take a seat besides the headmaster as he says, "She was the top student in her previous school, Miss Moore."
"Hmm. You'll get your fair share of competition here as well." I say. You can't beat Maya though. I'm sure she'll top.
"Here are the files." The old man passes me the documents and I skim through them, not really interested to know much. I know he'll accept just about anyone, if they have their pockets full.
Skipping the rest, I go towards the first page to get the name. "And you are..." I flip the page and the name stares back at me, 'Reema Mane.'
"Reema." She says. Is this her? No, it couldn't be. There are so many Reema's in this world, Maya's ex wouldn't be the one joining here. They were friends first she said... Does that mean they still talk?
"Yeah, Reema, I see you're repeating this year. Why's that?"
"Family emergency." She replies. The parents back her up, flaunting her talents, how she's been the valedictorian all her life, how she's got medals for singing and what not. Yeah... I don't care.
"Alright," I say stopping their rant and shift my attention to the girl sitting between them. "Well I hope this year goes well for you. I'll ask a student to show you around."
"Could you show her around?" Her mother asks. I open my mouth to say 'no', but the headmaster interrupts.
"Yes ofcourse. Miss Moore would gladly show her around." He says. "She's the finest teacher this school has."
I fight the urge to roll my eyes. I need this job, I remind myself. "Sure."
The parents pat her back and leave. And the headmaster shoos us away when his secretary gets in with his breakfast.
I walk around the school, with Reema following me. I vaguely show her every room, just passing by each or pointing out the farther ones without going in them. I'm a teacher, not a fucking tour guide.
"Well, that's about it. The first lesson is English today so I'll take you to the classroom."
"Okay." She says, observing other people, the students and teachers passing by us. Or maybe judging them. "Where's the washroom?"
"Over there." I point towards the left corner and see her figure disappear in the dim area.
Maya's voice shifts my attention when she says, "Miss Moore, I want to talk to you for a second."
I raise my eyebrows looking at her, and nod walking a little away so that people won't be able to hear too much but still would be able to see us. "What do you want to talk about, Miss Rao?"
"Seriously? My whole neck is red!" She yells in a whisper and groans saying, "I won't be able to go out openly for days."
I let out a low laugh and when the few people closer to us are out of earshot, I say, "You're too tempting. I can't help it, honey." Honestly, I would've made more, if that old sack wouldn't have interrupted us.
"I'm keeping this scarf as revenge."
I roll my eyes and say, "It's reminding you of Taylor Swift, isn't it?"
"Come on, it's clearly 'Red' themed."
"Just because it's red?"
In a matter-of-fact tone she says, "Du- Yeah, ofcourse."
"You're obsessed."
"Whatever, it's mine now," She says, and then continues looking back at me as she says, "Unless you don't want to gi-"
