"Maya, could you stay back for a moment?" Miss Moore asks while I'm packing my bag. I nod and continue with the task at hand.
"She loves you, baccha." Lara whispers mimicking my kaka and kaku's tone.
"Don't get too excited."
She grins running her fingers through my hair, which I curled at her home today. Then pats my shoulder walking out the class with Kiara by her side.
I go upto Miss Moore and ask, "yes miss?"
"I loved your poem that you wrote yesterday. Do you write often?" She asks gesturing to the seat in front of her where I go to sit.
I shrug. "Sometimes. It's just a hobby."
She hums continuing, "I noticed you wrote about arguments with your parents. Nothing else about them. Is there a reason for that?"
I look down and wonder how'd she catch that. It was just one sentence. Why would anyone analyse that much? We don't argue always- Do we? Before coming to America? Sure, but it isn't much now because of the distance. Does that mean-
Interrupting my racing thoughts, she says, "It's okay if you don't want to share, I'm not going to force you. Just know that I'm here if you need someone to talk to."
"It's nothing. I'm fine. W-We're fine. I think. Sorry." I apologise for my rambling.
She keeps her hand on mine leaning in, "You never have to apologise for that. Just talk with me. I'm here for you, angel."
"I'm fine, really." I say getting my hand away from her. I don't want to talk about this. My parents are amazing. I'm not going to shame them.
She searches my eyes and I avoid her gaze, looking back down. "Alright, well I also had a proposal for you. I've been looking for a TA and I think you're the best candidate, you get good grades, your attendance is perfect and I've taught you before. So if you're up for it, the offer's there."
I think for a moment biting my cheek. It would be good to try something new. So, I agree.
"Can I have your number? So that I can inform beforehand when I need you."
"Sure." I give her my number and she explains what all tasks I'd have to do.
I help her close up the classroom and she breaks the silence saying, "Remember what I've told you. You can talk to me about anything."
I nod and go to Lara who's waiting for me on her motorcycle.
Can what she said be true? We don't even fight mostly, they just shout. I'm not going to talk back at them so I let them. It terrifies me but that's just how they've always been. Before, they'd hit, but would also explain why they would do that, why it's necessary: To make me a better version of myself. And they're the ones who have sent me here. They're good, they've spent so much money on me, for my education. They're really good.
"How was the fuck?" Lara asks getting on the bike.
"Shut up. She just wanted a TA."
"And did you agree?"
"Ofcourse, I'm not going to turn a teacher down."
"It's starting!" She squeals and I grip her tighter when she increases the speed a little.
"What's starting?"
"Oh nothing, you'll see." I roll my eyes and hold onto her for dear life. She raises her voice a bit speaking again, "I was thinking we should host a party this Sunday at my house. Kiara's available. You don't have work right?"
