Season 3!
The Summer of 1985
Now that Steve and Layla's class had graduate a lot of people were preparing for college, Steve didn't get into any colleges and Layla didn't apply to any colleges, both staying in their hometown of Hawkins Indiana. The couple got jobs together at the new mall that opened up called 'Starcourt Mall' they worked in the ice cream shop 'Scoops Ahoy' they worked with a girl a grade bellow them named Robin Buckley. Nancy and Jonathan got jobs at 'Hawkins Post', Dustin was away at science camp while the rest of the kids stayed in Hawkins for the summer.
Steve hated his job while Layla didn't mind the job, even becoming friends with their co-worker Robin. Summer was going well for everyone so far, having no problems with the upside down. The lab had finally been shut down after admitting being the cause of Barbra Hollands death. Layla made as much time as she could for Steve, her dad and El, and the party.
Despite being down with the upside down Layla still never left her house without her emergency bag with some kind of weapon or protection, everyone told her she was just paranoid, but she couldn't help but think maybe they were wrong about the upside down being done for good. No matter how many times everyone told her it was gone and she had nothing to worry about, she couldn't help but shake the feeling that something was off about the whole situation.
It was turning out to be a normal boring day at work for Layla, doing the usual day to say activities of scooping ice cream and arguing with Lucas's little sister Erica Sinclair. A few hours into her shift she heard a familiar voice outside the break room in the front of store '... Dustin's home!' Layla realized at the same time as Steve, both ran out the break room to greet the young boy. Once Steve and Dustin finished their handshake Layla Brough Dustin into a hug asking about camp. After telling the couple how camp was Dustin insisted on the three sitting down to talk, they all sat down at a booth in the far corner to listen to Dustin's news. Layla and Dustin both had a cup of ice cream to eat while talking. Dustin started telling the two about his girlfriend named Suzie that he met at camp, both teens were surprised but happy for Dustin.
"So where's the rest of the party?" Layla asked the curly haired boy
"They ditched me yesterday..."
"What? No way" Steve said leaning closer on the table
"Yeah, but they'll regret it when they don't get to share in my glory" Dustin smirked
"Glory? What glory?" Steve questioned
Dustin leaned closer to explain to Layla and Steve, neither could understand what he was saying since he was talking so quietly.
"What? I can't understand you, speak up" Layla said
Dustin again whispered to quietly to be understood.
"Just speak up man" Steve said getting annoyed
"I said. I intercepted a secret Russian communication" Dustin practically yelled
"Okay, yeah. That's what I thought you said" Steve responded leaning back against his seat.
Layla couldn't help but realize that maybe her bad feeling was right. No way this wouldn't end up with them needing to save Hawkins... for a third time.
"So what exactly do you need from us?" Layla asked
"Simple. Help with translation" Dustin said pulling out a Russia to English translation book.
All three went to the back to listen to the recording Dustin had and translate. Robin soon came into the back with the group, Layla didn't hear the conversation, to focused on trying to figure out the translations. Robin and Steve were still arguing about who was doing what when Layla just up out of her chair yelling "Aha! I did it!" Everyone looked at her confused till she continued "I got the first two words! The week" Layla was excited while everyone else looked at her like she was crazy. She just rolled her eyes and sat back down while Steve and Robin switched places.
After a while of Layla, Robin and Dustin translating they got the first sentence. Layla opened the window from the back to the front to tell Steve.
"Hey! We've got the first sentence"
"Really? That's great! What is it?"
"The week is long" Layla responded with a Russian accent.
"Well that thrilling" Steve said monotoned. Layla stuck her tongue out at Steve before closing the window again and going back to translation.
They had been translating all day when it was time to close shop and go home, as they were walking out of the mall Layla went over the translated part of the code again.
"The week is long. The silver cat feeds when blue meets yellow in the west" Layla said not paying attention to the other conversation about the code and what it could be. As everyone was continuing the walk out of the mall Steve stopped and was yelling about a quarter, Layla threw him a quarter from her pocket and watched as he put it in a kids ride. Steve explained how the music on the ride was the same as the music in the code, meaning the code came from the mall. Robin was skeptical until he pointed out the brand 'Indiana Flyer'
"Well shit" Layla muttered to herself
Everyone left the mall after the discovery of the codes location, Layla walked to her bike wishing Robin a goodnight. Before saying goodbye to Steve she offered Dustin a ride, who happily accepted. Layla walked over to Steve's car to say goodbye before he left for his house. Layla handed Dustin her helmet and told him how to get on, where to hold, and how to ride.
"Okay. Got it, let's go!" Dustin said excited
"Okay, okay" Layla said smiling while shaking her head. After safely getting Dustin home she offered to come pick him up before she had to work tomorrow, again he excepted excited.
