CHAPTER 01
It's just an ordinary day. I wake up in the morning, have breakfast, go to school, and go home. It's just a boring cycle in my life.
—
My alarm clock rings. I slowly open my eyes, staring at the ceiling. The morning sunlight filters through the curtains, casting a warm glow into the room.
After a minute of staring into nothing, I decided to get up and take a shower to prepare for school. The water cascades over me, washing away the last remnants of sleep. It's a refreshing start to the day.
I turn on my speaker and turn it to full volume. I'm all alone here at this big house, malayo sa mga kapitbahay. The sound of my favorite music fills the air, energizing me for the day ahead.
I don't worry too much if I turn the volume up on my speaker, wala namang makakarinig. I love music, music was my savior from my depression. My parents are in another country, and I'm here, living on my own. But the music keeps me company, a constant companion in this empty house.
As I stood under the warm water of the shower, I found myself lost in the melody of the music playing from my speaker. It felt as though I was standing on a grand stage, belting out lyrics to an invisible audience.
My bathroom, with its tiled walls and echoing acoustics, tila naging entablado pansamantala ang aking banyo.
Thoughts swirled in my mind as the water cascaded over me. What if I took the leap and joined the band? My friend had been persistent in his invitations, but I always hesitated. Despite my love for music, the idea of performing in front of others made me feel uneasy.
It wasn't just about the music, though. I grappled with my discomfort whenever someone of the same sex touched my skin. It wasn't a matter of being homophobic, I simply felt awkward and unsure about physical contact in certain situations.
The thought of it made me squirm, even though I knew it was harmless, especially for my best friend. Hawak na hindi ko maintindihan na hindi naman dapat gawin, but the idea of joining the band lingered in the back of my mind.
It represented an opportunity for growth—a chance to explore my musical talents in a supportive environment. But the fear of stepping out of my comfort zone held me back, leaving me torn between longing and apprehension.
The music stops, and my phone rings. Someone is calling me...
I just ignored it and continued what I was doing— humming.
My phone is still ringing. Aishhh, who will call me at this early hour?
I searched my phone inside the bathroom, my left eye was close dahil sa hapdi dulot ng sabon, but I couldn't find it, it was still ringing..
Hindi ko nalang hinanap at naligo na, after a few minutes I'm done showering, that's why I always have an extra hour because I always take a bath that long. I put the towel on and get out of the bathroom, wiping my hair in another towel.
I don't have time for breakfast, but I have more time for a shower. Sinuot ko na ang uniporme ko. I look at the clock. I have time to walk. Lalakarin ko nalang.
I pick up my bag and lock the door to my house. I start humming and walk.
Maganda ang araw ngayon, masyadong maaliwalas, I look at my phone. I still have a lot of time. I go to the convenience store to buy some food that I eat while I'm walking to school.
Huminto ako sa tapat ng gate ng unibersidad namin, there's a guard checking IDs and all, aish, I need to remove my piercing again, my piercing on my lips is still swollen, kahapon ko lang 'to pinakabit, I should not remove this.
I removed all the piercing on my ear and on my brows, I bit my lips to hide the piercing on it, I smirk and saluted the guard using my two fingers and got in the gate, sinuot ko naman ang jacket ko at pumasok na sa building kung saan ang first class ko.
“I'll be participating at singing contest, nag fill up na ako ng form kahapon,” I answered and get his bag, alam kong may baon na pagkain siya sa bag niya.
“Pero p'wede ka ring sumali sa dance contest, tamang-tama kulang pa kami ng isa” he said and handed me a form.
“I thought you'll be participating at the singing contest too?” I asked him while chewing the food that I got from his bag.
“No, I back out, I know you'll be competing too, so? Sa dance contest nalang ako sasali,” he answered and shrugged his shoulder.
“Because of me? Are you fucking serious?” Hindi makapaniwala kong tanong sa kanya, nag back out siya dahil sasali ako?
He nodded while pouting his lips, that's gross.
“Oh, stop, you don't look cute, you look gross,” I said to him, and I distanced my table from him.
Pabiro naman niya akong sinuntok sa braso.
“I'm just kidding, but yeah, sa dance contest nalang ako sasali, kaya sumali kana sa'min para manalo tayo,” he said, and he put the form on my table and gave me a pen.
I look at him and my mouth still hangs open.
“Start na mamaya ang rehearsal,” he said, getting the form from my hand.
“Ito pa kailangan din pala 'tong sagutan” turo niya sa isang blangkong hindi ko nasagutan.
“Why?” I ask when I read at what he wanted me to fill up.
“Malamang magulang mo,” he sarcastically said.
“Are you kidding me? I know, but I'm legal age already p'wede na nga akong mag asawa, so why would they need the permission from my parents?” naguguluhan kong tanong sa kanya.
“Okay na ‘yan, ‘wag mo na lagyan,” he said, while scanning the form.
He asked me at tumingin sa mukha ko.
“Of course, what do you mean? Lagi naman akong pumapasok.” I answered him confusedly.
“I mean, may bantay ngayon for inspection right? Yung hikaw mo kitang kita. Buti nalang tinago ko tattoo ko, good thing is I have my jacket,” he said and laughed, he even hit me on my shoulder.
“I bite it, but I removed all my piercings on my ear, I'm planning to get a tattoo too, pag iisipan ko muna kung anong design,” I said to him and played my tongue inside my mouth, poking my cheeks inside of it.
Mannerism eh?
He just clapped his hands while laughing, he seems so proud of how I hide it, eh?
Our professor entered the room.
“Okay class, I heard about the contest. Napagdesisyunan namin na, you can practice about the contest in three days, but make sure all the activities that we give to you are passed after the contest, okay? Are we clear?” Our professor said while scanning us one by one.
Huminto naman ang tingin niya sa akin.
“Mr. Parker, let's talk about that piercing of yours later, papalagpasin ko ‘yan ngayon, may meeting pa kami, okay class, are we clear?” she said, but I didn't pay attention to it, I just smirked, biting my lip.
“CLEAR!” Our classmate said in unison, and our professor got out of our class.
