CHAPTER 6

The shrill noise of my alarm clock pierced through the quiet of the room, waking me up from my deep sleep. With a groggy hand, I reached out to turn it off, the abruptness of the noise leaving my ears ringing.

As I lay on my bed, the soft morning light filtering in through the curtains, I took a moment to shake off the remnants of sleep.

I slowly swung my legs over the edge of the bed and sat up, feeling the coolness of the tile floor beneath my feet. Nag unat na muna ako at humikab, rubbing the sleep from my eyes, I glanced around the room, the familiar sights of my belongings arranged in their usual places bringing a sense of comfort.

I didn't notice it yesterday, I'm too preoccupied with what happened.

The pain started to linger on my chest, causing my heart to feel like it was running out of air. I took a deep breath as I stood up, iniling-iling ko ang ulo ko, to set aside that pain.

With a sigh, I pushed myself up and padded across the room to the bathroom, the tiles cold against my bare feet. I turned on the faucet, waiting for the water to warm up before stepping into the shower.

The hot water cascaded over me, washing away the lingering traces of sleep and leaving me feeling refreshed. As I lathered up with soap, the scent of the shower gel filling the air, I couldn't help but hum along to the tune playing softly from the Bluetooth speaker perched on the edge of the bathtub.

The familiar melody lifted my spirits, setting the tone for the day ahead.

After I finished showering, I dried myself off and wrapped a towel around my waist before heading back into the bedroom. I pick up my uniform on my couch—a crisp white shirt and neatly pressed navy blue trousers.

I dressed quickly, smoothing out any wrinkles in the fabric before turning to face the mirror. In the reflection, I saw the remnants of a recent injury—a bruise marring the surface of my lips and a small cut on one eyebrow.

With a sigh, I reached up and removed the earring from my injured eyebrow, placing it carefully on the edge of the sink. Hindi ko na tinanggal ang hikaw ko sa may labi, it's too painful to remove, my lips still swollen, tinanggal ko na rin ang hikaw ko sa may tainga at maingat na inilapag sa may gilid, bago lumabas ng kwarto ay kinuha ko na muna ang earbuds ko.

The click of the door shutting behind me echos in the quiet of the house. Grabbing my motorcycle keys from the table by the door, I took a deep breath and stepped outside, ready to face the day ahead.

When I arrived at school, there was no one guarding the gate except for a few members of the student council. I hurriedly made my way past them when suddenly the president's council blocked my way.

I also cover my head with the hoodie while walking in the corridor with my hands in my pocket listening to music.

As usual, the stares of other students lingered on me as they whispered softly, as if I couldn't hear them. Hindi ko lang ito pinansin.

As I continued walking towards my classroom, the door of our classroom was already closed, indicating that our professor was inside. I checked my watch, it was still early, so I wasn't late yet. I opened the door and stood just outside.

“You're late, Mr. Parker” my professor said.

“I'm not, it's still not time,” I replied, taking off my hoodie and continuing to walk towards my seat. My classmates murmured, thinking I couldn't hear them.

I slammed my hand on the desk, creating a noise that silenced everyone.

“I‘m sorry, I didn't mean it,” I said, turning off my earbuds and looking ahead, biting my lip to avoid attention.

Vin kicked my chair lightly, and I turned to look at him. I just stared at him boredly and turned around to listen to our professor.

As our professor began to lecture, I listened intently to the class while still feeling the weight of their stares.

“Can you stop staring at me?” I interjected, catching them off guard. Mabilis silang nag iwas ng mga tingin, and our professor continued teaching.

After class, just before our professor left, may sinabi muna ito sa akin.

“Mr. Parker,  you're exempted from the quizzes you missed while you were absent.” With that, he left the room, nagtinginan na naman silang lahat sa akin at nagkibit balikat lang ako.

With two hours to spare before the next class, masyadong mahaba pa ang bakanteng oras, I leaned back in my seat, covering my face with my hoodie, and playing music through my earbuds.

Lost in my thoughts, I almost didn't notice when someone removed my hoodie.

Startled, I opened my eyes to see Vin standing there, holding my hoodie.

“What do you want?” I asked, adjusting my posture as he pulled up a chair in front of me, looking like he had something interesting to say.

“What?” I ask, looking at him.

“Nakauwi kana pala? Alam ng lahat ang nangyari sa'yo at sa—kaibigan mo,” he said as he mentioned the word friend, he lowered his voice. Mabilis akong yumuko at nagtakip ng mukha.

“Gisingin mo nalang ako kapag may prof na,” I said as I closed my eyes, lost in my music.

I blinked awake as someone tapped me. I slowly opened my eyes as I realized I had dozed off without even realizing it.

Sumenyas naman si Vin na may prof na kami, and our second professor entered the room. I quickly straightened up in my seat.

“Nandito kana pala, Mr. Parker,” our professor remarked upon seeing me. I simply nodded, not offering a response, as they began the lesson.

News about me seemed to spread quickly, and I was unaware that I had become a topic of conversation.

Time passed swiftly, and I hurriedly made my way out of the classroom towards the cafeteria. Kanina pa kumakalam ang sikmura ko.

“Jix, wait up! Sabay na tayo!” Vin called out to me, causing me to pause and wait for him.

“Ayos kana ba?” he asked as we walked, and I glanced at him but didn't respond.

He smiled, seeming slightly awkward at his question, and scratched his head.

“Sorry,” he added, and we continued walking in silence. Wala pa akong gana pag-usapan ang nangyari.
