CHAPTER 2
We don't have class anymore, the students are busy practicing for the contest. Vin and I went to the cafeteria to buy something to eat.
As we stepped into the bustling cafeteria, the aroma of freshly cooked food enveloped us. The sound of chatter and laughter filled the air, mingling with the clinking of cutlery and trays. Vin nudged me gently, breaking my reverie.
“Sabay na tayong pumunta sa practice mamaya, isasabay ko na rin ‘tong pinag fill up-an mo, deretso practice na tayo,” he said, his voice barely audible over the din of the cafeteria.
“Nakikinig kaba?” He asked, tapping my shoulder, but I didn't pay much attention to him and went to the crowd outside the cafeteria. Nakasunod lang siya sa akin habang nagsusumiksik kami sa maraming tao.
“Anong meron?” I heard Vin's voice asking some students what's going on with the crowd.
But I didn't hear it and continued on in the middle of the crowd. Napatakip naman kami ng tainga dahil sa nakakabinging ingay mula sa sigawan.
“Fuck, my ears hurt,” Vin said, covering his ears.
“Daming chix,” he added as he looked around us.
Tumingkayad ako ng kaonti para makita kung ano ang pinagkakaguluhan nila. There's a lady wearing a black winter coat and wearing sunglasses as if the weather were cold. It's summer. What the heck? Despite the summer heat, she seemed unfazed by the weather.
“What's with the winter gear?” I muttered to myself, puzzled. Despite the odd choice of attire, she exuded an air of beauty and elegance that captured my attention.
Huminga ako ng malalim at umalis na kaagad. I thought there was something interesting there, so I excused myself from the crowd.
“Ay potek—hintay, Jix! Shit—makikiraan, excuse me.” I heard Vin's voice cursing and excusing himself to chase me.
“Anong meron do‘n sa gitna kanina?” He asked me as we made our way back inside the cafeteria, sasagot palang sana ako nang bigla itong nataranta. “Langya, ‘yong pagkain ko pala, bayad na 'yon,” he suddenly said as he hurried to the cashier.
I just followed him to order some food to eat.
“Te, ‘yong pagkain ko dito? Alam nating dalawa na bayad ko na ‘yon,” he said to the cashier, drawing the attention of other students with his raised voice.
I chuckled and gave him a playful tap on the shoulder before leading the way to a nearby table. Rinig ko pa rin hanggang sa inuupuan ko ang pakikipagtalo niya sa tindera, sinuot ko nalang ang earphones ko at kumain na.
As I was busy eating, someone approached me and asked, “P'wedeng makiupo?” I looked up to see three girls holding trays of food, one of whom had already taken a seat in front of me.
“Do I have a choice?” I responded with a hint of sarcasm, but she didn't seem to mind. As she settled comfortably into the chair, I glanced over to where the troublemaker was, walking towards the table where I was seated, a mischievous grin plastered on his face.
“Uh, hi— I'm Francesca, this is Marie, and this is Hailey,” the girl in front of me introduced herself and her friends. I simply nodded in acknowledgment, not really in the mood for small talk as I continued to focus on my meal.
Just as I was trying to resume eating, Vin arrived and gave me a hearty pat on the back, causing me to jump slightly and spill some of my food, tinignan ko naman siya ng masama at tumawa lang ito ng bahagya habang nagkakamot ng ulo.
