PAST

"Sh sh, look!" Lucas whispered, pointing at their neighbor. They watched through the bushes as she walked outside, her door, a dead opossum on her doorstep. They'd been doing that for the past week now, almost getting caught the last time. As she walked out, she stepped on it, screaming. Immediately, she ran back in, calling the cops. Max and Lucas rushed back to his house, shutting the door behind them. "That was a close one.." Max said, out of breath. They could get away with anything.

As Max sat in the car, she couldn't help but smile. Her mom had continuously asked her why, but she didn't answer. As she arrived at school, she quickly got out of the car, waving goodbye to her mom and shutting the door. As she walked towards the doors, her mom, looked at her confusingly, then drove away. When Max knew she was gone, she immediately ran towards the near gas station.

When she got there, she noticed Lucas there already. "You made it, nice." He said, high-fiving her. She smiled, grabbing his hand and leading him to their usual spot.

They lied down in the grass, staying quiet for a while. "What do you think being older will be like?" Max asked, turning her head to face him. "I'm not sure. But I hope we stay best friends forever." He replied, turning to her and smiling. "Definitely." She giggled.

"What do you mean we're moving?" Max looked at her mom, shocked by her words. "We're going to California to live with your dad, and it's final." "But I don't want to leave! Especially Lucas!" She exclaimed. "Go say goodbye." Her mom said, her voice stern. Max felt tears come to her eyes. "But.." "Go." Max walked away sadly, over to Lucas' house.

She knocked on the door sadly. A minute later Lucas answered. "Hey Max! You don't look happy.." He said, gritting his teeth. "I have bad news.." she said quietly. "What is it? It can't be that bad. I mean, it's not like you're moving." He chuckled awkwardly. Max looked at him, her eyes teary. "Wait, you're moving?!" His jaw dropped. "No, you can't leave!" He hugged her tightly, not wanting to let go. He shut his eyes, crying into her shoulder. She hugged him back, then heard her mom calling from across the road. "Let's go Max!" She exclaimed. "I'm sorry.." She said after pulling away. "Promise me we'll always be best friends.?" Lucas said, wiping his eyes. "I promise." She replied, smiling at him before walking away.

She stared out the window of the car as her mom drove. It would be a long drive, so she made herself a spot to sleep. She couldn't help but think of how much she would miss Lucas. She hoped they would meet again in the future. Though she knew that it probably wouldn't happen.

"Max?"

PRESENT

"Max? Hello?" She snapped back to reality. "Huh?" She looked up from her plate, her mom and dad looking at her. "Fix your posture." Max did as told. She sat up, continuing to eat. Things had changed. She was now 16, and always told to act her age. Remembering when she was younger made her feel warm inside.

When she finished her food, she took her plate to the sink, then went to stand out front of the house. She sat in one of the chairs, watching the clouds pass by. Kids played soccer in the road, laughing and talking. She smiled. Sometimes she wished she spent her childhood better, played more games. "Hey!" A kid exclaimed, looking at Max. She looked at him. "Wanna play with us?" He asked. She knew her mom wouldn't want her to, but it would only be for a bit. She stood up and walked over to them.

After playing for around an hour, Max's mom came outside, seeing her. "Max!" She exclaimed. Max turned to see her mom looking straight at her, making her nervous. "Sorry guys, I-I gotta go.." She ran back towards her house, following her mom inside. Her mom grabbed her arm tightly. "What were you doing out there?" "Ow-mom that hurts.." She said, wincing. "Why were you playing with those kids? You are much more mature than that! If I see you playing with them one more time, you're grounded." She let go of her arm, Max immediately reaching for it. "Ow.." She went back to her room, closing and locking her door. She sat down on the floor in front of her bed, wrapping her arms around her legs. She covered her face, wishing she could just be younger again. She began to cry, even with it being childish. She didn't care.

She sat on the couch watching tv when the doorbell rang. She got up and went to go answer it. She opened it, her eyes widening. "Wanna get outta here?" They asked. "Lucas..?!"
