I kept looking at him from the window as he was sleeping peacefully on the bed. Although it pained me to death seeing him with all those wires and that almost broken shoulder, however as he opened his eyes after 72 hours, I felt like I was finally alive. I still couldn't forget the doctor's words which kept ringing in my ears as we brought him here.

My thoughts drifted back to when we rushed him here.

72 hours ago...

'Mrs. Nayak... although Mr. Nayak has been shot on his shoulder. The bullet was quite close to one of the arteries close to his heart.'

I didn't know what he was trying to tell...I just knew that I wanted my Shankar to be ok...

'What do you mean Doctor? Is he ok? Will he be fine?'

The doctor nodded saying 'We hope so...but we wanted to ask you...Does your husband smoke? If so...how many cigarettes per day? And ...any substance consumption?'

I knew he smokes. I had caught him smoking. But I didn't know if it was just occassional or if he would smoke frequently. I didn't really have an answer. I looked at Kevin who stood next to me when Simi who stood behind me said

'He is a chain smoker Doctor. Atleast 2 packs everyday!!! Although he's reduced it to like one pack but then...stress makes him smoke...you can count for two packets per day!!!'

The minute I heard that from Simi's mouth I was shocked. He smokes so much?

'Well !!! Too bad!!! We happened to check things...we had a doubt and we suggest to do an angiogram!!! I wouldn't want to scare you all but...we think...that there maybe blockages in his arteries!!! He....
He had a cardiac arrest !!!' doctor said making me collapse on the chair.

'Card...Cardiac... arrest as in hear...no..
No no... that's not possible na??? He's...he's just... he's in his early thirties doc... doctor!!!' I managed to say because I didn't really know his age when the doctor nodded saying

'Agreed!!! But looks like he's exerted himself beyond what his body was capable of...especially when he was shot...I mean that's...that is really tough...its purely his will power because the bullet was a little away from his heart...Plus...he is a smoker Mrs.Nayak!!! We can't forget that!!! Blood thickens when people smoke and they don't really pass through these arteries easily. Blockages...Chest pain...stress...then...a cardiac arrest!!! Age has nothing to do with it!!! I hope you know smoking kills!!!'

That last word literally shuddered me from within. I kept looking helplessly towards the doctor when he took a deep breath and added

'Look Mrs Nayak...I am a doctor and I have to be honest with the patient's family. We have to be very careful dealing with him. Plus he was brought unconscious here...We can't say anything Mrs.Nayak...Although...we want your consent so we could do an angiogram and only after that we can take a call!!!' he said leaving me gut wrenched. I slowly looked at Simi when she pulled me into her chest. My brains weren't working at all. I didn't know how our lives changed so much, so fast.

And all this because I had chosen to step into his life. If only...had I chosen to not marry him and simply lived all by myself Shankar wouldn't have been in this condition today. He was shot because of me. He's hurt because of me. I am the reason for his peaceful life to go upside down. If only had he married some other woman, doesn't matter even if it was for a contract marriage, he wouldn't be in the condition he is right now.
