Todd didn't think that his life would get worse. He, unfortunately, turned out to be wrong.

The Catwings, as he came to call them, were brutal killers. They ripped through people like they were paper; and it was horrifying to watch.

As him and Charlotte were staying the new shelter, he thought back to when he encountered Malia, in that deformed and thin form.

He had just woken up at 12 pm (he was a late riser) and ate some granola bars as his breakfast. He threw away the foil in the trashcan and went outside.

As he was making his way through the neighborhood, something jumped out of a bush that would give him nightmares for the rest of his life.

His friend Malia got bitten by something a few months prior. All of them-Avery, her, Todd, Charlotte, and Olivia-were camping out in an alleyway when a creature flew out of the trees and hovered over the fire.

He could still remember the tremors, the strong winds, and the roaring waves he heard after the creature snapped its fingers. It announced that its name was Carlos, the king of a demon-like race called the Ifnos.

He warned them that if humans didn't change their ways, a massive plague would befall them.

Todd didn't believe him. He thought he was just saying to scare them- it worked, but that didn't mean it was necessarily true.

But when Todd saw Malia crouched there, in front of him, his disbelief was close to shattering into pieces.

Her mouth constantly moved. Her lower and upper jaw were split apart in two halves, each half having rows of sharp white teeth that shone in the sun.

Drool hung off of them, coating her lips in a silvery gray. Her tongue was split in three, and each piece was moving freely, curling like pink, fleshy tendrils.

Her nose was rotting away, and two large holes took the place of it. Her eyes were pure white globes with no sign of a pupil.

Her blue vest, flannel jacket, and pants were ripped beyond recognition. They hung on her skinny body loosely, threatening to fall off at any second.

The thing that terrified him the most and sent chills down his spine was the way she moved. Her limbs were contorted in a way that allowed her to run on two legs as easily as walking on all four of her limbs. Her joints stuck out in places they shouldn't be in, and her once well-manicured nails were replaced with brown claws that looked like they were caked in mud.

Dried blood surrounded her mouth, giving off a nasty smell that made Todd want to faint.

She tilted her head, assessing him from top to bottom.

He slowly backed away. He did not want to get by those teeth; he had a feeling that they did more damage in terms of infection.

With her rotten nose, she sniffed the air. It seemed like she was looking for something... or someone.

Todd wasn't fooled by those white eyes. He guessed that she could see him just fine, perhaps better than before.

She suddenly let out a guttural growl and lunged at him. He yelped and ran, faster than he'd ever run before.

He sprinted down the road. He heard her claws make a clattering sound as they hit the asphalt.

He quickly looked to either side, trying to find a hiding place. He saw a bush that was growing near the side of one of the houses. He dove into it just as Malia rounded the corner.

He held his breath as he peeked through the leaves, watching her. She swung her head around, taking deep breaths. It was almost like she was hunting him, controlled by something that took over her body.
