Hazefhur came up to me all of a sudden.
He had just gotten back from hanging out in the States for a while, and he sauntered up to me and sat down with a heavy thud.
I was busy handling Jhaufyther's khits, so all I did was give him a wary look. "Yes?"
"Can you scratch my back?" he asked.
"I'm in the middle of something right now," I replied, gesturing to the four khits.
"I know, but this is really important," he said.
I glanced down at Flickhuni, who was chewing her brother's tail. He didn't notice because he was busy watching a butterfly.
"Really important," he repeated for emphasis. His eyes rounded, and he crouched down while staring at me.
I looked away. "Can you please handle the cuteness for right now?"
"Pleeaasee?" He was begging by now, and his ears drooped like a sad dog's.
I caved in. I tried hard to not look at him, but like a regular cat his cuteness clutched me in its hands.
"Fine! But here with the khits. I don't want to get in trouble with Jhaufyther because his khits went wild again."
He nodded agreeably and said, "Yay!"
"Where's the itch?"
Using his tail, he pointed to the middle part of his back. "Right there. I can't get at it. I tried using a stick, but it just left splinters of wood."
I climbed on to him with the help of his paws, ears, and nose.
Sitting just behind the itch, I flexed my hands. "Just try to relax."
I started scratching the itch, and he immediately groaned in pleasure. "Oh, that's the spot. It feels sooo good."
I continued on scratching until he said, "That's good now."
I hopped off him, and he rose to his full height. "Thank you so much, Sam. That itch had been bothering me for days!"
He looked at me gratefully. "I owe you one."
"Yeah, don't mention it. Now go and do whatever you were gonna do before you came here."
He nodded and bounced happily away. I watched him go with a shake of my head. Oh, Hazefhur, I thought affectionately.
Lhrioun came crashing through with a wad of leaves in his jaws. "Where's my brother and Hazefhur?" he asked.
"I'm not sure where Jhaufyther is, but Hazefhur just went that way." I pointed in the direction he went.
He took off running. I had no idea what those leaves were, but they must have been really important.
Flickhuni tapped me on my head. "I need to go pee," she whispered.
I sighed. I was taking care of khits that were my height, and it's not an easy job. I still enjoy it, but probably because it was Jhaufyther's khits.
I had no idea where his first litter was, but Slaughlitte told me they were having an adventure, so I was glad that they were having fun.
I took Flickhuni into the woods so she could do her business. As she raised her leg, howls of joy suddenly rang out, and they were LOUD.
"What was that?" she asked. She had just finished peeing.
"I have a pretty good idea what those noises were," I said while stifling a laugh.
As if the thought summoned him, I saw Jhaufyther's plumy tail in the camp. "Let's go check it out."
With Flickhuni right by me, we saw Jhaufyther playing with his khits. He was batting a ball of moss at them, and they fought one another to see who would be the first to toss it back to him.
Okay, he doesn't look bad was my first thought. Then I saw his movements, which were quick and jerky.
And here we go again with the catnip.
Lhrioun came running in, his eyes wild. "I have the catnip ball!" he exclaimed.
As he placed it on the ground, the khits-including Flickhuni-gathered around it to take a look.
"Catnip?" Flittefhur asked curiously.
"It'll make you feel like you're spinning!" Lhrioun said.
The khits oohed and aahed. "Guys, you're too young for this. Just let the adults eat it."
They all pouted at me. "Pleaaseee? Let us just try it!" Trihtberi said. "If it tastes bad, we won't do it again."
"I don't know..."
They did the same big-eyes faces. "Okay, okay, FINE! But you're going to tell your mother why you four were running around crazily."
"YAY!" They took wads of the catnip and started munching on them.
"It actually tastes pretty good," Flickhuni commented.
"Yeah, but I don't feel anything," Flittefhur said.
"Just give it a moment," I said. The brothers were watching in anticipation, their crazed eyes focused on the khits.
Trihtberi was crouched on to the ground, but she suddenly stood up straight. Her pupils dilated all the way, and the entire fur on her body puffed up.
"I'm seeying cholours," she slurred. She staggered around and hiccuped.
Her siblings quickly felt the effects. They started bouncing up and down, sprinting all over the place. They did twists and twirls in the air, their small wings flapping drunkenly.
"Let's go to the STATES!" Lhrioun declared.
"WHAT?!" I exclaimed. "Do you want them to fly while drunk?"
"Oh, Sam, you're such a party pooper," Jhaufyther grumbled. When he used human words, that's how I knew he was hammered.
Without them saying anything, they launched into the air, although they almost lost balance and crashed to the ground.
I suddenly remembered that I was supposed to be at the office building.
I had no choice but to follow the Catwings. I deliberately flew slower to see how they were acting.
Apparently, while flying, the catnip isn't nearly as effective. The khits had to grab onto the brothers because they didn't know how to manage the catnip properly.
I saw them land near Todd's old friend group, so I took the chance to fly to the office building.
I skidded to a stop and ran in as the guards gave me a nod. "I'm here," I panted.
"Hey Sam," Carlos said. "I just came back from seeing Marissa."
"How's she doing?"
"Really well, actually. I felt the baby's kicks."
"Aww, that's cute."
He had a huge smile on his face. "I can't wait to be a dad."
It made me happy to see him happy. I know, he has a lot of faults, but I truly believed at the time that he would be a great father.
(I'd like to point out that while I'm writing this, Carlos's daughter came into the room with him behind her. He picked her up and took her away, which proves my point.)
"So what's going on?"
"Um... this might be a bad time to tell you this, but Jhaufyther and his khits are nearby and high on catnip. Also Lhrioun."
He heaved a sigh. "Again? This is like the fifth time this week."
"Who's high on catnip?" Riley had just finished showing Jeremy and Dakoda around.
I hadn't seen the two of them in a long time, and I was happy they were here.
"Jhaufyther and his khits. Also his brother," Carlos said.
She groaned. "Why?"
"I don't know, but they landed near Todd's group, so-"
"WHAT?" Todd rushed down the stairs and through the door.
We all looked at each other. "I guess we have no choice but to follow him," Riley said.
