Riley struggled under him, but he held on as he wrapped his hands around her neck.
He started choking her, and he felt Carlos try to pry him off.
In his mind, he heard a voice saying Oh, what a fragile human being. If only it were that easy to kill you. Sadly, you have to be alive for a large amount of time, but at the end I promise that you will perish.
Why am I choking a girl I just met? he shot back.
The voice laughed. Oh, that's just my oldest brother playing tricks on you. He knows what you did, and he is not happy; and rightfully so.
Who? Who is your brother?
Hmm. I'd rather not say, but all you need to know is that he is your worst enemy.
Avery found himself being surged with strength. He never was a buff guy, but he could lift decent weights.
Now, he felt like he could lift a building. Even Carlos, who was significantly stronger than him, couldn't pull him off.
Riley's eyes started to close.
He kept on choking, trying to be pulled off by everyone, including Scarlett.
Finally, Riley passed out. Only then did his surge of strength disappear.
Carlos threw him off and kneeled by Riley's side. The other girl placed her head over her chest.
He glared up at Avery. "What the fuck is WRONG with you?"
"I..." He looked down at his hands and flexed them. I'm not even a violent person. So why did I choke someone to the point of her passing out?
"Is she dead?" Scarlett asked. The worry in her eyes was, surprisingly, not for Avery.
The girl raised her head. "Thankfully, no, she isn't."
"I got a bone to pick with you," Carlos growled. "First of all, why? Secondly, she didn't even DO anything."
"Something made me do it," he tried to explain. But he knew that that was a pathetic reason.
"Really? 'Cause whatever 'made' you do it caused my best friend to pass out."
Oh no. That... was his best friend?
Todd looked at him with a sad expression. "Dude. Why?"
"I don't know, okay?" he snapped. "I was... being controlled, somehow."
"BEING CONTROLLED?" Carlos yelled. "My ass! You just made someone pass out, you bitch!"
"But the Catwings..."
"Had a reason to knock your friend out," the other girl finished for him.
"My other best friend, Sam, is right." Carlos looked at Avery with such scorn he wanted to melt. "Your FRIEND was throwing rocks at literal, fucking, babies. Why? Because she was mad that they were doing what they normally do- and that's killing."
"Look. I know this is a bad time to ask, but... is there a bed we can place her in?"
Carlos and Sam looked at each other, then he sighed. He rubbed his forehead. "Yes. Just... go up the stairs and open a random door. Each room has a bed, anyway. It doesn't matter what door you pick."
"Why are you being so helpful?" Avery couldn't help asking him.
He glared at him again. "This may seem unbelievable to you, but I actually feel things. I'm not a monster, and I'm helping you because I don't want your friend to die- even if she made a stupid decision."
