Todd didn't believe it.

The blue and white male had offered his tail to him, then nodded at his back like Hop on.

He turned to Riley, who said, "He doesn't let anyone ride on him. Take the chance."

So he climbed onto the Catwing's back and settled in the middle of his wings.

"You're not gonna hop on?" he asked Sam.

"Nah. I have wings of my own." To prove her point, they suddenly popped out from her back.

At this point, Todd wasn't surprised.

"Be right back," Carlos said. He dashed off.

"Where's he going?"

"There's a little girl called Bri who he's basically raising," Riley explained.

"She doesn't have parents of her own?"

"They sent her away because she was causing problems," Sam said.

"Oh. That's so sad."

"I know, but Carlos is doing a fantastic job raising her."

He came back a moment later with a little girl in his arms. She looked about six, with stringy blonde hair. She was wearing a white shirt and blue jeans.

When she looked at Todd, he could see a light in her eyes that seemed much older than six years.

"Who's that?" she asked Carlos when she saw him.

"That's a new friend," Carlos said.

"Is he coming with us?"

"Yes."

"Okay." She looked at him again, almost like she was assessing him with those green eyes.

One of the male Catwings turned around to look at her. To Todd's surprise, he had infinite gentleness in his eyes.

The girl's eyes widened. "He's not going to hurt you."

"Are you sure?" She looked up at Carlos with scared eyes.

"Do you trust me?"

She nodded. "Just reach your hand out, and he'll do the rest."

The Catwing placed his nose in her palm, and closed his eyes. He sniffed deeply- Todd got the feeling he was getting her scent so he could recognize her better.

"You need to know their names so you can differentiate them better," Carlos said to him.

"Okay."

"So, the big black and white one's name is Flihkfhur. He's the oldest out of all of them."

"Flihkfhur." He tested out the word. He was surprised that it wasn't hard to pronounce.

"There are two Catwings with blue and brown fur: Fhlotleph and Trihtleph.

"You can tell the difference between the two of them because Fhlotleph's a lot bigger. He also has green eyes, while Trihtleph has turquoise eyes.

"The one that stands out the most is Dlhithirk; he has blue and white fur, and looks exactly like his father.

"His sister, Ghitpethal, kind of looks like a leopard, actually. That's how you can tell which one is which, since they both have blue and white fur."

"Interesting," Todd said genuinely. "How do their genes work?"

"Oof. That's long and complicated- do you really want to know?"

"If you can shorten it, then yes."
