"dad!"
Julie quickly stops and looks at her dad. I back away, sitting on the sofa. "Is this the junk that was in the attic?" she nods. "Some of this stuff is in pretty good shape," he laughs, hitting the drums. "WHAT? Stop touching my drums; tell him to stop touching my drums." Alex looks to Julie, and then me, I shrug. "What do you want me to do?" I whisper, making her dad look over at me. I look back and smile awkwardly, then rest my head on the back of the coach. "I liked that song you had on," he says, walking to Julie. "Sweet, were sunset curve?" Luke walks over to him. "Tell your friends," Reggie adds. I laugh. Julie looks over at me, worried. "It's just an old CD we found," I say quickly. He smiles and hugs Julie. "It's still nice that you're listening to music again; out here, you can play whatever you want whenever you want," he smiles. "Awwww," Reggie tears up. "That's nice," I laugh quietly, trying not to ruin the lovely moment between Julie and her dad. "Stay out of this," she whispered. "Oh, honey, I'm sorry," her dad chimes in quickly. "Oh, no, not you, dad, can you give me a minute?" she starts pushing her dad towards the door. "Hey, hey, hey, we are going to figure this music programme thing out, ok?" she smiles. "Thanks, dad," he smiles. "You girls going to be okay out here alone?" I nod. "Yeah, all good, sir, we will watch them," Luke steps forward. This time I'm able to hold in my laughter until he's left, when I burst into laughter, making Julie laugh too. She smiles at me and moves to sit next to me, sighing.
"He liked our music," Luke says. I roll my eyes. "Yeah, but he's a dad," I say condisendingly. He gives me a dirty look, which is interrupted by Jules spiralling. "Why can't you be normal ghosts? Go hang out in mansions; I hear Pasadena is nice! she says before storming out. "Jules wait!" I run after her. "Julie, slow down!" She stops and turns to me. "Why do I have three random ghosts, not my mom?" she says, tearing up. "Oh, Jules," I say, giving her a hug. We turn to walk into the house when there's another white flash, and Luke is suddenly standing before us. "AHH, stop that seriously!" Jules says. "I'm sorry," Luke says. "What do you want?" I say quickly. "I know this is all completely insane, but you do know how rad this is? Actual people can hear us play," he says. I smile. "I know, it's just that I've had a really, really bad day," Julie says. "Well, I'm sorry you had a bad day, but three guys just found out that they had a bad 25 years, and then they found out that the one thing they lived for in the first place they can still do. That's pretty rad." She smiles slightly. "You're right, it's just..." she says. "Your bad day," Luke says.
"Look, I'm sorry we came into your life, but... what I just felt in there actually made me feel alive again. We all felt alive again. So, you can kick us out if you want, but we're not giving up music. We can play again. That's a gift no musician would ever turn down. You have to know that. Clearly, your mom is into music." My eyes widen as I look at Julie. "was," Julie says, and I sigh. "She passed away a year ago," I say. "I am... so sorry," Luke quickly says. "We didn't know," Alex says from behind us. "It's alright," Julie says. "You guys haven't seen her anywhere? have you?" I looked at Julie. "No, I mean, you're kind of the first person we've seen." Alex says it apologetically. "Yeah, but she's not dead, so that doesn't really..." reggie says I interrupt "Yeah, she knows"
There's an unnecessarily long silence where everyone just stares at each other. "Sorry, I got mad," Julie says, finally filling the silence. "You guys are kind of good," she says, making me laugh. "KINDA!" I suddenly realised how enthusiastic I was and stepped back. Luke stepped forward. "You realise that's 25 years of rust just being... dusted off?" he claps his hands, making me and Julie chuckle again. "Do you play?" Reggie asks, "Oh, no, that's all my mom's stuff out there. Cami sings, though! She's an amazing songwriter," I smile. "When I have the best assistant ever," I say, hugging Julie and making her smile. "Your mom was good! If that's her song out there, I mean" Luke is signalling to the studio. There's another awkward silence; this time I cough and nudge Julie.
"I guess if you need a place to stay, you can stay in there," she says quickly. The boys smile and celebrate, laughing slightly. "There's a bathroom in the back and a couch that turns into a bed if you still use any of that stuff. and "
"Dibs in the shower!" Reggie hops in, and Julie looks at him. "I just really like showers." I laugh and look at Julie, who is slowly backing away. "This...this is too weird," she says, walking away. "Congratulations, boys!" I laugh and follow Julie into her house. We head straight to her room again, and I grab my bag. We change into pyjamas and climb into bed, and Julie texts Flynn.
Julie:
What would you say if I told you there were three ghosts living in my mom's studio?
I give her a funny look. "Shadow, say your crazy." I laugh. She sighs, deleting the message and putting her phone down. "Cami, am I letting my mom down by not playing?" I shake my head. "Of course not, Julie; she loved you even before you sang! and she loves you, you know." She sighs and hugs me tightly. "Goodnight, Cami," she smiles.
"goodnight Jules"
