completely soaked by this point. And she swore to herself she was never taking a bus again. They were bad luck for her. Now she was running through the woods with her best friend. Plus Grover and Annabeth. They looked like a bunch of homeless kids. Or like they slept in the Hudson River. They smelled like it too.

Grover was shivering and braying, and Cam couldn't blame him. His big goat eyes turned slit-pupil and full of terror. "Three Kindly Ones. All three at once."

Percy was still in shock, but he kept his grip in Cam's hand.

"Come on! The farther away we get, the better!" Annabeth yelled.

"All our money was back there," Percy reminded her. "Our food and clothes. Everything."

"Well, maybe if you hadn't decided to jump into the fight—"

"What did you want me to do? Let you guys get killed?"

"You didn't need to protect us, Percy. We would've been fine. Cam even took down one of the Furies before you grabbed their attention," Annabeth pointed out.

"You mean before she fell and hit her head?"

"That was because you swerved the bus."

"Because they were about to try to kill you! That gave Cam the opening to take out the Fury!" But Percy knew she was right. It was his fault Cam got hurt.

"We could have done it on our own! We were fine!"

"Sliced like sandwhich bread," Grover cut in. "But fine."

"Shut up, goat boy," said Annabeth.

Grover brayed mournfully. "Tin cans... a perfectly good bag of tin cans."

Everyone kind of just shut up for the next few minutes. Sloshing around the mud with a weird, tense feeling hanging in the atmosphere. It really ruined the vibe. Annabeth fell into line next to Percy,

"Look I..." Her voice faltered. "I appreciate your coming back for us, okay? That was really brave."

"We're a team, right?"

"It's just that if you guys died... apart from the fact that it would really suck for you guys, it would mean the quest was over. This may be my only chance to see the real world."

The thunderstorm finally let up. Percy could see the glow of the city behind them, barely able to see anything except the shine of Cam's red hair.
