just about sucked. Miserable, in fact.

The four had to camp out in marshy woods about a hundred yards from the road where some very obvious high school parties were held. There were soda cans and fast-food wrappers littered all over the place.

Ew, was Cam's first thought when she saw the site.

They had taken some blankets and food from Aunty Em's, but they didn't even think twice about not lighting a fire. After Medusa and the Furies? Hell nah. They didn't want to attract any more attention today.

Percy volunteered to take first watch while everyone else slept.

Annabeth didn't argue. As soon as she closed her eyes, she was snoring in the ground, which Cam found kind of hypocritical after Annabeth called her out for snoring. Grover fluttered up with his shoes to the lowest bough of a tree and looked up at the sky. Cam wasn't really sure what to do. It seemed like every time she closed her eyes, she was scared she would just get a splitting headache again.

"Go ahead and sleep," Percy told Cam and Grover. "I'll wake you if there's trouble."

Cam nodded slowly and laid down next to Percy. She turned away from him and tried to focus on getting her mind to relax.

Grover nodded, but he still didn't close his eyes. "It makes me sad, Percy."

"What does? The fact that you signed up for this stupid quest?" Percy questioned.

"No. This makes me sad." Grover pointed at all the garbage on the ground. "And the sky. You can't even see the stars. They've polluted the sky. This is a terrible time to be a satyr."

They went on talking for a while about a great god of nature named Pan. Apparently that was why Grover wanted his searcher's license, so he could search for him like the other Satyrs in his family did. Then they went on talking about the quest, which Cam completely tuned out while she tried to sleep. But she couldn't. She really couldn't. Eventually Grover decided to sleep and Percy waited till he could hear the satyr's snores.

"I know you're awake," Percy said. "How's your head?"

Cam opened her eyes and slowly sat up. In a quiet voice she said, "I'm fine."

"Either you're lying to me and you're too afraid to sleep or it's one of those nights where you feel too much energy again."

"Kind of both. The energy thing has been getting more frequent since I was determined," Cam told him.
