Coast Guard boat was able to pick them up. But they were too busy to keep them long, or figure out how four kids in street clothes ended up in the middle of the bay.

They were dropped off at the Santa Monica Pier, Cam shivering under her towel with her sopping wet clothes. Percy put an arm around her, hoping to warm her up a bit, but he wasn't able to stay dry. He had will himself to get soaked so he didn't raise suspicion by being totally dry. He also gave Grover his black converse. Better for the coast guard to wonder why one of them was barefoot instead of why one of them had hooves.

After reach dry land, they stumbled down the beach, watching the city burn against a beautiful sunrise. Cam felt the heat of the sun, never having been so happy to see the morning.

"I don't believe it," Annabeth said. "We went all that way—"

"It was a trick, Percy said. "A strategy worthy of Athena."

"Hey," Annabeth warned.

"You get it, don't you?"

She dropped her eyes, her anger fading. "Yeah, I get it."

"When we find him, I'm gonna stab him," Cam muttered, a strange anger rising in her. She felt like he was somewhere nearby and was causing it.

"I don't get it!" Grover said. "Will somebody—"

"Percy..." Annabeth said. "I'm sorry about your mother. I'm so sorry..."

Cam held his hand at Annabeth's words.

"The prophecy was right," he said. "'You shall go west and face the god who has turned.' But it wasn't Hades. Hades didn't want to a war among the Big Three. Someone else pulled off the theft. Someone stole Zeus's master bolt, and Hades's helm, and framed me because I'm Poseidon's kid. Poseidon will get blamed by both sides. By sundown today, there will be a three-way war. And I'll have caused it."

Grover shook his head, mystified. "But who would be that sneaky? Who would want war that bad?"

Percy stopped in his tracks, looking down the beach. "Gee, let me think."

There he was, waiting for them, in his black leather duster and his sunglasses, an aluminum baseball bat propped on his shoulders. His motorcycle rumbled beside him, its headlight turning red in the sand.

"Hey, kids," Ares said, seeming genuinely pleased to see them. "You were supposed to die."

"You tricked me," Percy said. "You stole the helm and the master bolt."
