𝐍𝐎 𝐎𝐍𝐄 on Earth could understand how thankful Camille Franzer was to be able to go to Merriwether College Prep.
The number one thing on her list that made it great was, of course, that Percy went there. The two had been best friends since first grade. It was only natural they wouldn't split up and end up in different schools all of a sudden, despite the fact that she was afraid of that happening.
The second-best thing was that their two new friends Tyson and Serenity went there. The four have been hanging out since the beginning of the school year.
Number three, she was able to do lacrosse and ballet, the latter being how she met Serenity.
And lastly, they didn't have grades. Which meant no excruciating study sessions. And damn that was a bonus.
As much as the other kids pretty much sucked, Cam was very thankful for the stress-free seventh-grade school year. Not even a single monster attack this year. But of course, she had to jinx herself later on the last day of school.
See, it started in her English class. Everyone in the school had read Lord of the Flies. Which is basically about a group of schoolboys getting stranded on an island without any adults. And now that exam day was here, the teachers just stuck everyone outside without any adult supervision and just waited to see what would happen. The only stuff that happened were the wedgie contests, two pebble fights, and an all-tackle basketball game led by the school bully, Matt Sloan.
"Oh, wow. I hope I don't fail the exam. That would be such a shame," Percy said dully.
"Why worry? You are very smart, Percy," Tyson told him.
"That was sarcasm, big guy," Cam told him.
Tyson was the only homeless kid at Merriwether. Cam always figured his parents abandoned him because he was... different. He was six-foot-three and built like an abominable snowman. Except, he cried a lot and was afraid of everything, including his reflection. His face was misshapen and brutal-looking, though Cam, Percy, and Serenity were never judgemental of how he looked. Despite his fear, he was a very sweet guy. He did talk a little funny though, and Percy figured he'd just never been to school before. He wore tattered jeans, grimy size-twenty sneakers, and a plaid flannel with holes in it. He only smelled like a New York Alleyway because that's where he lived. In a cardboard refrigerator box off 72nd street.
Merriwether picked him up as a social service project to make the students feel good about themselves. Unfortunately, they couldn't stand him. Once they found out the big, six-foot-three kid was a big softie, they found ways to tease him. Between Percy's mom, Cam's Aunt Jennie, and Serenity's dad, social services must have been called like a billion times about Tyson. But they always swore they could never find him in that alleyway.
