Sam stood at the front door of her childhood home the next day with Gavin by her side. She hadn't been this nervous in along time. She had struggled with the repercussions of telling her mom and sister the truth about what really happened to her fifteen years ago. But if this was going to be her last day she wanted them to know. She had texted her sister, Jaime, who was now married with two kids of her own, and told her to meet at their mother's house.
"Hey." Gavin said, sensing her anxiety. "It'll be fine. I'm right there with you."
She nodded and opened the door and walked in.
They were both greeted with hugs. Sam had not seen them in a few weeks. They sensed Sam had something important to say. They sat across from her mom and sister on opposite couches. Jaime had a big smile on her face as did her mom. It took Sam a second to understand they thought she and Gavin were coming with good news.
"I'm sorry." Sam said. "I think you think........ I'm not pregnant." She blurted out.
"You two are getting married!" Her mom gushed.
"What? No...... mom, just listen. Jesus, I'm so sorry." She stammered.
Gavin took her hand. "We will, eventually, get married." He told them. Sam looked at him and smiled, forgetting for a moment why they were there.
Her mom and sister looked on, confused.Sam knew she just had to tell them.
"I wasn't completely honest with you when I came home thirteen years ago." She started. "And I haven't been completely honest with both of you since I returned."
Her heart was racing. "I'm going to tell you a story, but before I do I need you both to keep your minds completely open to what I'm about to say......Can you do that?"They looked at each other. "Of course, sweetheart." Her mom replied.
Sam went on to tell them everything, all the way up to what they were going to do later tonight. From being kidnapped out of school, her stay at the Nest, the massacre that followed, and meeting Casey and becoming a Chosen One. It was a lot to swallow. It was also similar to a story Matt had to believe at one time, and it was something her friends also had to. They all had to take that leap of faith. The strangeness of her disappearance, followed by Gavin being in the picture almost immediately after her return, helped them believe after they thought about it. All the things her mom and sister probably talked about privately when Sam wasn't around started to make sense. The hardest part was telling them how Walker made her think they were dead. Her mom took that part hard.
"So what are you now? Some sort of assassin or something?" Her sister asked.
"Not really. We just have these.....abilities." Sam replied.
"I know it sounds crazy." Gavin said. "All this was foreseen and written about long before we were born. You just have to trust Sam, and believe."Sam knew as long as her mom and sister were in the dark they were safer than if they knew the truth, but she HAD to tell them.
Her mom got up and hugged her, as did her sister, Jaime.
"I wish you would have told me sooner." Her mom said. "And I'm sorry about Jenna, she was like family to us."Once Sam started working for Jenna she brought her around her mom and sister occasionally. A face to cover the lie. Jenna took a liking to them and visited often, giving updates on Sam's work when she was out on assignment. Sam knew Jenna liked visiting though, being around her mom, and Jaime and her family helped Jenna's own loneliness. She became part of Sam's family.
"So this thing you have to do tonight? I'm guessing it's dangerous?" Jaime asked her.
Sam and Gavin stood.
"Yeah." Sam replied.
"I'm assuming telling you not to do it won't stop you." Her mom said.
"This is what we're here for, mom."
Her mother hugged her with tears in her eyes. She looked at Gavin. "You take care of my baby, okay?"
"I will Mrs. Dunne."As they walked to the car hand in hand, Sam exhaled. She had carried the weight of lying to her family for over a decade. It felt good getting it out. Still, she hoped she would get the chance to see them again one day.
