Phil looked over across the coffee table at Gavin, who was sleeping sitting up. He had a .45 magnum on the side table next to him. Sam was sleeping too, her head resting in Gavin's lap as she laid across the sofa.Shannon was also asleep. She had dozed off just past midnight. Her head resting on Phil's shoulder. The night had been quiet. There was no sign of Gabriel. Maybe he didn't know where Matt's cabin was after all.
He thought Matt and the others had to be close to finishing up their business in Maple Brook and would be on their way soon. Even though Phil knew it was his turn to keep watch he felt his eyes getting tired. He had to force himself to stay awake.Someone was gently shaking him. He had dozed off. Damnit! He opened his eyes to find Shannon on her knees in front of him. He looked at her in a panic. She smiled at him. It was more like a sad smile. Thats when he knew. Shannon didn't have to tell him, but she did anyway.
"He's here." She whispered.
Phil got to his feet.Shannon had woken up when the others were sleeping and had a sick feeling in her stomach. When she went to look out the window she saw Gabriel's men, dozens of them, hiding behind trees and anywhere else they could find. Waiting for Gabriel to give the order to attack.
"What's it look like?" Phil asked.
"Piece of cake." She lied.
He gave her a slight smile out of the corner of his mouth. He knew it was bad."Should we wake the kids?" Phil asked.
Shannon nodded then gently shook Sam. Phil was a little less gentle as he kicked Gavin's feet. Both awoke with a start, grabbing their guns.
"Shhhh." Shannon warned, putting her finger to her lips.
Both their eyes were wide with fright.
"It's okay." Shannon assured.
"They're here?" Gavin asked.
Phil nodded. "You guys are going to go out the back door and make your way to my house.""No fucking way, man." Gavin argued.
"No." Sam replied. "They'll kill you both."
"Sam, there's over fifty men out there with Gabriel. If we all stay we all die. Some of us have to live to fight him with Tyler and the others." Shannon explained.
Sam started to cry as she was catching on that Shannon and Phil had accepted their fate. They were going to die tonight, and they were making sure Gavin and Sam lived."We won't leave you." Sam cried. Her eyes were glowing emerald green now.
Shannon put on her toughest face even though it killed her. She wanted to comfort Sam, but now wasn't the time.
"Listen to me." She said sternly. "You tell the others we went out fighting. Then you make these assholes pay." She kissed Sam's cheek and hugged her tight."Phil, c'mon man." Gavin pleaded.
"Sam is your responsibility." Phil told him. "It's your job to protect her, and you do that by getting her out of here."
Gavin nodded and shook his hand.
"Keep lookout from my bedroom window. You can see Matt's whole house from the there. Keep the lights off." Phil instructed. "Just in case they come your way next."Gavin hugged Shannon then almost had to carry a crying Sam out the back door. They disappeared into the night.
Phil and Shannon went back to the dining room table, a good thirty feet from the front door. They loaded extra mags and more guns. Shannon strapped on her vest and Phil sheathed two swords for her. Shannon tightened Phil's bulletproof vest for him.He held a 9mm in each hand. Shannon had two automatic rifles in each of hers. They stared at the front door. Phil turned suddenly and kissed Shannon on the lips, a good, long, ten second kiss. When he pulled away she smiled, although a bit surprised.
"I just don't want to never have done that." He explained.
"Well then." She said, still smiling. "Shall we do this?"
He smiled back. "I'll see ya in the next life."The door blew open and Gabriel's men charged in.
