Chapter 6
HEATHER

You fell asleep, leaning the wall while waiting for Muichiro to wake up.

However, when you wake up, you find the room empty, and a warm blanket draped on your sleeping figure. Muichiro must've put it on you. The thought made you smile, a happy blush appeared on your cheeks. Even though Muichiro had forgotten most of his past, his kind heart did not change.

It has been a few months since you came here.

Every day, the particular routine was the same. When you wake up, Muichiro has already gone off to train at the crack of dawn. Despite losing his memories, there was a fire inside him that drove him to train and became stronger. And to say he was a prodigy was an understatement. You were surprised by how fast he climbed the ranks and became a Hashira.

Meanwhile, you help out with the Butterfly Estate along with the other girls. There was one particular girl that you became best friends with.

You walked along the hallway, immediately brightened up at the sight of the dark-haired girl. Sitting down beside her, you gave her a soft smile.

"Good morning, Kanao. Did you just finish training?"

Beside you is a petite young woman with dark purple eyes framed by quite thick eyelashes. Her thin black hair was slicked back and tied in a ponytail on the right side of her head. She tied her hair with a pink and green butterfly ornament. She was extremely beautiful, similar to a lone flower among the green field.

The first time you met the girl, you immediately decided that you two have to become friends.

She takes out a coin and flipped it before nodding towards you.

"Yes, good morning."

You managed to get her to open up to you a little, which you're proud of. There was a curt yet soft reply before the comfortable silence overcame the two of you.

Just then, one of the triplets, Kiyo rushes towards the hallway with a bowl of water and a towel in her hand. Seeming like she needed a hand, you gave a wave to Kanao before taking the large bowl from the young girl.

"You should be careful. What if it spills on you?"

The girl thanked you with a cheerful smile.

"Is there a new patient?"

"Yes, the Tokito-sama... oh!"

The girl let out a yelp as you dashed off in an unbelievable speed towards the door. You immediately slide it open, only to find the Insect Hashira treating Muichiro.

"Mui-kun, are you okay!?"

You inspected him before calming yourself down, relieved that he isn't heavily injured. You hand Shinobu the bowl and she started dabbing the wound with a soaked wet towel before wrapping it with bandages.

The boy stared at you with a blank expression for a moment, most likely trying to remember who you are. He then nods at you and reply in an uncharacteristically soft tone.

"I'm fine. You shouldn't worry, (Name)." His face expressionless as ever.

His words freeze you in place, just like a bucket full of ice being dumped on you, the reality sets in. That's right. Being a demon slayer means that you have to prepare for the worst, heavy injuries...and even death.

"...Right."

Before you can even process your new-found emotion, you feel Muichiro staring at you. Forcing yourself a smile, you gently grabbed his uninjured hand and immediately felt his fingers closing on yours.

"But please be careful next time."

This sight was unfamiliar to you because Muichiro never gets hurt on missions. Not once did a demon was able to lay a finger on the Mist Hashira.

"I will be careful."

"It seems one of the civilians got in the way and Tokito-kun here injured himself from protecting him."

Shinobu explained the situation to you, telling you not to worry as Muichiro was very strong.

The morning left you in a daze. Only then, you realize how much other demon slayers frequents the Butterfly Estate. Staring at the injured patients, you felt the seriousness of the situation sink in. 

Looking around, your eyes caught the sight of a young man who was wrapped heavily in bandages, and by the looks of it, it seems he can't even move due to his injuries. You couldn't imagine the pain you might feel if Muichiro, Kanao, Aoi or any one of your friends is in his place. Knots of dread had weaved itself in your stomach and it made you want to puke. 

You feel your blood run cold at the thought of it alone. It was as if an icy hand had reached into your chest, gripping your heart and squeezing until it ached. 

Pacing around in your room, you tried to calm the rampaging anxiety within you. 

This simply can't do.

'This time...'

'This time...I want to protect you.'

Standing up, you hurriedly walked out of your room, trying to find a certain someone. Seeing the girl in her room, you brightened up immediately. 

"Kanao! Could you teach me the basics for swordsmanship?"

You gently grabbed her hands; an expectant look on your face. Hoping she'd say yes, you leaned closer towards her.

Kanao however seemed startled at your sudden appearance and your course of action. You let go as she takes out the coin, and with a flip of her finger, Kanao tossed the coin into the air. It spun, catching the light with each rotation, and time seemed to slow down as both girls watched its descent. It landed on Kanao's hand with a soft clink.

Your heart pounded in anticipation. 

Tails.

"Sure, I will teach you."

After seeing the results, Kanao gives you a soft smile.

Leaping from joy, you immediately hugged the girl who seemed flustered at your action yet again. 

"When I become an expert, I will protect you, Kanao." You declared, your expression was rather soft and sincere. 

Kanao's eyes widened in surprise, a subtle blush creeping into her cheeks. She blinked owlishly at her, before regaining her composure. A smile, her lips curved into a genuine smile, warmer than she had seen before. It was a smile that softened her usual composed demeanor.

"Thank you, (Name)."

With that, she turned towards the training grounds, gesturing for you to follow. The evening sun cast long shadows behind them.

I love Kanao :) she's literally so pretty and underrated. I really want to develop (Name) as a lively character that can fit right into the story and not as a character who steal canon characters spotlight or someone that was forced into the story. I hope I am doing a good job 😊
