Chapter 2
GYPSOPHILAYou remember that day vividly.
Yes, that special day, where you got a place to call home.
The night was cruel, the painful storm dominated the otherwise quiet night. All your life, you were raised along with the Tokito twins. The bond you three shared was the most precious.
You loved them.
A lot.
"Say, Mui-kun."
"Hmm?"
Muichiro turns his head to look at you, an innocent smile etched on his lips. He scoops out the water from the river with the bucket as he patiently waits for you to speak your thoughts.
"Why don't I have a last name? I don't know my last name...I wonder why my parents didn't tell me."
Even the slight mention of the matter, causes the tears to gather up in your eyes. Unlike Muichiro and Yuichiro, you do not live with your parents, as long as you remember. His father had found you in the forest as a kid, you told them about your parents, who promised to come get you later, so you obediently waited and waited. The Tokito family has took you as their own in ever since then.
However, you grew up without knowing your parents had abandoned you.
As ignorant as you are, who bears the innocence of a carefree child, had never questioned anything.
Until, you heard what you weren't supposed to hear.
The Tokito couple deliberately avoided the topic of your abandonment, promising to tell you everything once you get older with a gentle ruffle of your hair and a reassuring smile. You believed them. They must have a good reason for that. Maybe you were too young to understand anything. You were willing to wait a few years for that. They never broke a promise before.
You did not mind the lack of last name, but whenever you had tried to play with other kids in the village down the mountains, their forever favorite topic always seemed to be your last name.
"Only (Name)? What about your last name?"
Another one chimed in as they all stare at you.
"Yeah, you know, family last name. Don't you have one?"
Another one of the kids asks curiously, and you felt small and cornered under the intensity of their gaze. You shifted uncomfortably, hesitating for a moment before deciding to tell the truth.
"...I don't have one."
You flinched as you heard a collective sound of disappointment.
"Ehhh? That's so lame."
"Where're your parents?"
"We don't want to play with a girl who came out of nowhere."
You teared up, embarrassed and overwhelmed with the judgemental reactions you received from the kids.
What's wrong with not having a last name? You thought.
You are (Name), nothing more and nothing less. You did not belong anywhere.
And that fact has started to bother you as well. Sadness soon turned into anger.
"Why does it matter to you!?"
With anger and embarrassment glinting on your eyes, you tackled one of the kids, punching him repeatedly with all your might which resulted in the adults having to intervene.
You left the village while tears flowed down your cheeks, and feeling the glares of their parents stab at your back.
You slammed open the door to your house, surprising the twin's father who had just finished cooking.
"(Name)! What happened!?"
His worried voice caught the attention of the twins as well. Emerging from the other room, Yuichiro raises a brow at the tear-soaked face you are currently wearing. A tinge of worry could been seen in his eyes as he furrowed his eyebrows.
"Uncle, where are my parents? Please tell me."
The man stares at you with pity, and a hint of hesitation. Before he gets a chance to say anything, a panicked Muichiro interrupted the discussion.
"Dad! Mom is burning up again!"
The man dropped everything he was doing before rushing inside the room, leaving you and the twins alone in the kitchen.
"Don't care about those useless things. Those kids only know how to talk big and bully others."
He managed to figure it out, you thought.
Yuichiro's words were harsh but it oddly calmed you down. You absentmindedly nodded, feeling him wiping your tears with a handkerchief.
"Take it."
You looked down at the slightly wet cloth, it was patterned with yellow stars on the edges.
Muichiro gazes at you worriedly from the corner of your eyes.
But before he can say anything, he was cut off by his father who came out of the room, his expression tinged in worry. Under the gaze of three expectant eyes, he forced himself a gentle smile.
"Your mother will be fine. I will give her the usual herbs and it should calm her fever down."
He puts on a pair of straw hat and cloak before patting all of you on the head.
"I will be back before sunset okay? Be good and take care of your mother."
He turned towards you with gentle eyes.
"When I come back, me and your mother will explain everything to you, I promise."
With that said, he left.
Yuichiro took the duty of looking over his mother while he tasked you and Muichiro with getting water from the river.
"Did... something happen when you went to the village?"
Muichiro hesitantly asks, as if afraid to worsen your mood.
"Other kids in the villages told me, they all have last names. Even you and Yui-kun have it. Only I don't have one."
Muichiro looks at you worriedly, panicking at the glowing tears that threatened to fall at any minute. There was a deafening silence the two of you as it became more and more uncomfortable.
"If that's the case, why don't you take my name?"
He suggests with a smile on his face, making you look up at him with wide eyes.
"Tokito? A-are you sure?"
"It's a gift, from me."
He crouched down beside you and brushed off your tears gently, giving you a warm smile.
"Tokito (Name), doesn't sound too bad right? I am sure everyone doesn't mind."
In that moment, your eyes that reflected his smiling face were the most beautiful.

Psst! I heard that Yuichiro had a crush on (Name), don't mention it in front of him though!

Author Notes
Muichiro giving his last name as a gift to (Name) was the first idea I had for this gift, so romantic of him, right?
Also for the lore, (Name) was abandoned in the forest at the age of 5.
