A Diversion of Distance

Thursday, October 5th

It crossed my mind the next morning that I hadn't exchanged phone numbers or contact details with Dallon before I left. I wondered if the offer was some kind of joke that he had made up, albeit, not a funny one. Though I felt it was a sincere offer, and he had a basis to want to keep me out of the band, for fear of risking his own position, so I decided to believe it. I would go over at lunch today to get his phone number during band practice, that's it, then I'll go back to Lunch Club. It won't take long , I thought.

I had to sit through another awkward lesson while Grace and Ryan chatted, after it was over I grabbed my things and started heading over to the music room, Ryan caught up to me.

"Where you headed? Thought you had Lunch Club." He asked, grabbing my arm to get my attention.

I turned to face him, and flushed a little when I felt his hand around my forearm. I looked into his eyes, his doey brown eyes, I had missed him. After agreeing to leave the idea of the band for good I was sure I'd miss him more, it was almost heartbreaking seeing him stand here in front of me. "Band practice, I just need to... get something." I had made it sound more suspicious than intended.

"Well you can at least walk with me then." Ryan smiled, he loosened his grip and I felt the ghost of his touch lingering, my mind took me back to just a week before when he had kissed me. What did that mean? I hoped it wasn't a goodbye. I smiled up at him as we walked, our arms occasionally grazing.

We made small talk, how's your poem for class going? What covers are you working on? Have you been writing recently? Neither of us had the guts to bring up any of the things that were really weighing on our minds, maybe a short walk between places wasn't the right circumstance to bring up such topics. I felt relieved he hadn't.

"Y/N!" Spencer exclaimed and pulled me in for a hug, Jon was smiling from ear to ear. Dallon stood behind them scowling.

"So you decided to re-join then?" Jon asked, as if he expected a yes.

I shook my head while watching Dallons intimidating expression locked on me. I looked up at him and motioned to the door, he nodded and followed me out. We closed the door to the music room behind us with the others inside, they stood there, looking dumbfounded as to what was going on.

"Why are you here?" Snapped Dallon.

"Your number, you never gave me it, I need it to contact you for lessons." I spoke in a hushed tone, trying to get Dallon to be a bit more discreet, I didn't want the others to know I was ditching them for some keyboard classes.

Dallon groaned and pulled out his phone and shoved it in my hand, "Put your number in there, then don't come back unless I contact you. Part of the deal is that you stay away from our practices."

I obliged and put my number in his phone, he took it back not bothering to check it was the right one before re-entering the room and letting the soundproof door thud closed behind him. Atleast that didn't take long . I walked back to Lunch Club, I had barely missed anything.

Or so I had thought. When I approached the door the sound of arguing grew louder as I drew closer, there was one voice mostly, it sounded like Kayla, she was shouting at someone about something.

"AND WORST OF ALL..." Kayla dropped off, the room fell silent when I entered. "Take a seat Y/N." Kayla drew in a much-needed breath, I looked around at all the other members, they all looked uncomfortable. Lucy was on the other side of the table from me trying to calm Kayla down, I saw who appeared to be a professor, standing by Kayla receiving the brunt of her anger.
