"He can go and stick his Math scheme up his ass!" Vesper says as her and Aster walk home. "Honestly, a lunch DT for trying to answer a question? Bullshit."
Aster raises an eyebrow.
"You told him to fuck himself."
"And rightfully so!"
Aster rolls his eyes and Vesper smiles smugly.

For most of the term, Vesper had been getting detentions. So she just had to make sure Mum and Dad didn't know about todays lunch one. Dad would have her phone and lord knows what Mum would do (probably just have a go at her). But still. She also needed to tame the brown bush she had on her head. The wind at break had blown her hair all over the place.

She hadn't yet told Aster, Mum or Dad what had happened on Sunday...
She'd been walking home from Rishmi's house, and stone henge and been speaking to her again. Out of pure curiosity, she's hoped her the fence of the stone circle once more. And... well the shorten it. She's opened a weird door, met a daemon, and probably freed a bunch of daemons.
But now it was Monday.
Nothing had happened.

Aster opened the front door.
"Absolutely not! No way!" They both heard dad protest from the living room.
Arguing again. Great.

"What do you think it's about this time?" Vesper says to Aster as they put their bags down.
"Probably food shopping or something stupid like that." Aster says, taking off his blazer and dumping it ontop of his bag.

"Elliot," Mum begins. "We don't even know who freed them, our best bet is calling them."
"I don't even know where it is!?" Dad shot back.
Aster and Vesper looked at eachother. They knew when dad was telling a fib.

"Should we tell them we're home?" Aster says.
"Are you kidding?" Vesper says, walking up to the closed living room door. "This is getting interesting. Come on."
Aster rolls his eyes and walks up to the door too.

"It's just a thunder bolt Elliot, it's not very hard to miss!?" Mum says.
Vespers hand goes to the thunder bolt necklaces around her neck. Dad had given it to her when she was ten.
"I don't have." Dad says again.
"We both perfectly well that you do!"

Footsteps. Towards the door. Shit!!!
"I don't." Dad insists. "For the last time."
Vesper bolts for the stairs, followed by Aster.
They each the top of the stairs and Dad opens the door.
"...what are you two doing?" Dad asks.
Vesper turns around.
"And when did you get back?" He says.

Vesper looks to Aster. Aster looks to Vesper.
"We've been here ages!" Vesper says.
"We got back just now!" Aster says at the same time as Vesper.
Fuck.
Dad eyes both of them.
"If you're going to eavesdrop." He begins, "At-least lie convincingly."
Vesper rolls her eyes.
Of course dad of all people would catch them.

"What's happened?" Aster asks.
"It's none of your business." Dad says. "Get your homework done."
"No way!" Vesper retorts. "Tell us! Why were you talking about a thunderbolt?"
Dad freezes. Had she caught onto something?
"...no reason." He says.
"Is mum okay?" Aster asks.
"Shes fine." Dad says. "It's all sorted."

Mum opens the living room door, furious.

Dad is such a bad lier.
Mum spots the necklaces around Vespers neck.
She looks at Dad. Dad looks back at her, exchanging silent words.
Dad sighs.
"I give up." He walks back into the living room.

Vesper watches Dad shut - slam really - the door shut.
Mum looks back at Vesper, standing at the top of the stairs.
"Ves, sweetie," mum begins. "Could I just borrow your necklace for a bit?"
Vesper glances at Aster, Aster glances back.
"We'll go on then!" Aster says.
Vesper rolls her eyes and unclamps the necklaces and walks down the stairs, Aster following after.

"Mum, what is going on?" Vesper says as she drops the necklaces into Mums hand.
Mum glances to the living room. The back door slams shut.
"Well your father seems to have left." Mum says. "I suggest we sit down and talk."

"Wait wait wait," Aster says, cross legged on the sofa. "So you and Dad saved the world from a daemon? At our age?"
Mum nods.
"Exactly."
Aster looks to Vesper with a look of bewildered shock.
"What the fuck?"
Vesper chuckles. Vesper knew her brothers scientific mind was trying to process the moment.
"You seem to have breached the Diabalon, Vesper." Mum says. "And I need the necklaces to reach someone."
"Who's someone?" Vesper asks.
"Oh god please don't answer." Aster says, his head in his hands, obviously trying to process the fact Mythology was real.
Vesper laughs. And then a thought comes to mind
"And also," Vesper says. "You've known each other for what? Twenty years? That's a long time to be dating and married."
Mum chuckles.
"Actually, your father asked me out at sixteen so it was a while until he admitted." Mum says. "Another time I can say I was right."
"What?"
"Ask your father." Mum says. "Anyway, when your father gets back you speak nothing of this, okay?"
"What!?" Vesper exclaims
"Why!?" Aster shouts at the same time as Vesper.

Mum puts up a hand to silence them.
"You and I both know why." Mum says. "Your father, quite frankly, would go mad."
Mum stands up.
"Now I suggest you both go and do your homework before your father comes back and gives you further word on it."
Vesper rolls her eyes and stands up, taking her blazer off.
"Fine." She frowns.
Aster stands up and follows Vesper.

Aster stares at Vesper as the walk up the stairs.
"What?" Vesper says.
"You have a- silver hair?" Aster says.
"You calling me old?"
"No- not grey hair dumbass, a silver hair."
Vesper pulls her phone out as they reach the top of the stairs.
Holy shit. He was right. A small piece of hair in her pony tail was bright white. It wasn't obvious but once you saw it, you couldn't unsee it.
"What the fuck?" Vesper says.
"It's probably just stress." Aster says, matter of factly. "Most people get silver or grey hair when they're stressed. You been stressed recently?"
"No." Vesper says, staring at her reflection.

Vesper had prided her self in looking almost identical to her Mum. And she'd seen pictures of when she was younger, she'd always said grandad had allowed her to dye her hair silver. But maybe that wasn't the case? Maybe that was another secret she'd been hiding from the two siblings.
Aster walks into his room.
"We'll have fun with whatever homework you have." He says, standing in the doorway.

The front door opens.
Dad walks in.
Mum walks out.
Oh here we go.
Dad pulls his phone out his pocket and heads up the stairs. Vesper pelts for her room, shutting her door behind her. She hears Asters door shut. Then Dads bedroom door opening, and slamming shut.
Hypocrite.

Vesper opens her door.
Aster opens his.
"You think he's okay?" Vesper asks, poking her head around her door.
"I hope so" Aster says. "Should I check?"
"No?" Vesper says. "That's a terrible idea. He'll know we spoke to mum."
"Good point." Aster says, wracking his giant brain for an idea, running a hand through his blonde hair. "He's gonna find out mums doing something. He always does."
"Hm, yeah." Vesper says, looking at dad's door. "Probably best to leave it."
"Good idea." Aster says. "Now I have maths revision to do." Aster shuts his door.

Vesper stares at Asters door.
Whatever Mum was about to do, it wasn't good.
