Earlier that day....
The door to the vault creaked open. Rory's head poked through. She froze when she saw me.
"You coming in or not? The tea's gonna get cold."
Hesitantly, she stepped in. Her eyes wandered throughout the vast space. Scanning the bookshelves and the impressive icy sculptures. "Will Tohma be joining us as well?"
"No."
"Oh, okay," she sat across from me. She stiffened her posture and clenched her jaw.
Rory Castillo already got my Vice-Captain's stamp of approval, which was a feat in itself. I wanted to see for myself what kind of person she was.
I doubted she would accept an invitation for tea if it came from me. So I had Tohma do it.
Though, I was beginning to regret giving him the afternoon off. Rory was probably more comfortable talking to him than to me. At least he prepared some tea for us.
"Got a problem?"
"No, not at all," she rested her arms on the table. "So, what did you want to talk to me about?"
"Your involvement in this mission."
Her hands slid onto her lap, "I'm sorry, I'll back off-"
"Given it's okay with your captain, I want your participation when we raid the orphanage tonight."
Her relaxed face dropped, "Don't you have enough people on it, though? I'd hate to be a hindrance."
With Tohma, myself, Errant, and Fuji in this case, we definitely could have it all taken care of. Though, a high ranking anomaly was not the only problem. There were children to rescue. I would rather have more than enough personnel at the ready than risk being short staffed.
Given her current knowledge of the mission, she seemed like the best person to recruit on short notice.
I leaned back into my chair, "You snoop into a case that's not yours, deduce with minimal evidence, and now you want nothing to do with it?"
"It's not that. I do want to help."
"Then why the hesitation?"
Her eyes shifted to the table before they returned to mine. "My combat skills aren't exactly my forte. I'm just wondering how I would be useful."
"You think manipulating sound isn't useful?"
Initially, I thought she had a talent for mimicking voices. Then, in combination with Tohma's stigma, she was able to bypass the soundproofing anomaly in my room. Learning about her making the Masterpiece News go quiet made all the puzzle pieces fit.
I could care less about her being able to fight. Many ghouls and general admission students were sent on missions with very little fighting involved.
Her lips curved into a grin, "You figured it out, Sherlock Holmes?"
"It doesn't take a genius, James Moriarty."
"I thought I was more like a Dr. Watson."
She seemed more like an Irene Adler, but I would never tell her that out loud.
"So, what's your decision?" I asked her. "I don't have all day."
She fidgeted with the fairy charm on her necklace, pondering. Her finger movements then stopped. I was met with the earth and sky she held in her eyes. "When do we need to leave?"
